"Promise me ned" Any conjecture to what that promise is? And what prices did Ned pay to keep that promise?

To answer your question, the most popular theory is that Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. So the promise is for Ned to keep him safe. The price to pay would then be against his honor for supposedly fathering a *******.

Animusman, Welcome to the Chronicles Forums. Excuse me for a second...

Pssst... TK, go easy on the new kid.

Sorry Ani, I had to send a message to another poster. Promise me, Ned. I think it means that Lyanna and Benjen switched places. Ben died and Lya joined the NW. Lya is now Coldhands. But you probably wanted a serious answer...

It could mean that Lya wanted Ned to not tell Robert that Jon was her son by Rhaegar. We saw Robert's attitude toward Dany, so we can assume he'd have killed Jon out of hand if he'd known.

Or it could mean that Lyanna wanted to be buried at Winterfell... nothing more. But I doubt it.

Or it could mean that Lya wanted Ned to pretend that her son was actually his *******...

Or it could mean that Lyanna wanted Ned to kill Ashara Dayne, that two timing, scheming b****... Err, sorry, sometimes the fantasy possesses me.

Or it could be that Lyanna wanted some combination of Ned to show mercy to her child, to keep the secret that she loved Rhaegar, to keep the secret that she secretly wed Rhaegar, and to never tell Robert any of the above. This is the generally accepted view.

The price Ned payed. Marital strife, lack of trust from Catelyn, shame, loss of honor, loss of esteem in his children's eyes, no true reconciliation with Robert, and oh what was that other thing.... oh yeah, DEATH.

I may have beaten Boaz to the punch but his right hook had more behind it.

TS, lol, you must've beaten me to the punch by mere seconds. My right did have more behind it... cold pizza, stale popcorn, and a popsicle... of course the diet pepsi is in my left hand.

Hey, now that we have Animusman here to revive/rehash old discussions (that's a not a bad thing, don't take it that way, it's actually a lot of fun) does that mean I can stopped being considered new?

I agree. Jon is Rhaegar and Lyanna's son In AGOT Ned tells Catelyn that jon is his blood..I dont remember the exact words at the moment. Robert Baratheon warred against the Targaryns because of what Rhaegar did to Lyanna, but what exactly happened has not been revealed yet. As to 'the promise for Ned to keep him safe.' I dont think that is the promise because why would Ned consent for Jon to join the Night's Watch, which is certainly a dangerous occupation. I think the promise is to let the world believe Jon is Ned's son to not only appease Robert's thirst for Targaryn blood and keep him hidden from the Lannisters...especially Tywin Lannister who ordered Rhaegar's wife and children slain. Sending Jon to the Night's Watch would keep Jon far from Lannisters and any legitimacy of his claims to the Iron Throne and not betray his friendship with Robert Baratheon.

My first thought was "What the !&^? Another f&%^ thread on this."

But, Boaz has taken care of business here and I am at peace.
