Looking for a children's book, maybe Newberry winner

I was read a book in elementary school, I remember the librarian saying the book just won or was nominated for the newberry...this was around 1993, no later than 1995. The book was illustrated and it was about these children who build a city/village out of bottles and trash etc. and the part I remember most was they built a graveyard for a lizard (I think) towards the end. Does this ring a bell? I never was able to actually read this book, but I have been interested for about 14 years so if anybody knows...

This is probably it! "Roxaboxen" by Alice McIerran. It is a FANTASTIC book my mother read to my brother and I when we were little. It was based on an actual place out in Arizona, too!

This book is almost certianly "Roxaboxen" by Alice McLerran. It is a fantastic story about children who make a town out of boxes, rocks, colored glass, and other objects they find in the desert in Arizona. They have a graveyard, but the only grave is for a lizard they found. It is a sweet story, and is actually based on a true place where the author's grandmother? mother? played in.
