Between about 5 and 10 years ago, I borrowed a book from the library, want to read it again, but cannot remember author or title.
I think the title had something about a tree in it but cannot remember exactly.
The main character was a performer of galactic fame, skilled in every form of performance art. One of his dances was the glass dance, where there were glass tumblers arranged on the floor and he danced from tumbler to tumbler - the significance of the dance was something about a battle and the tragedy of it.
His best friend from childhood was an alien who was like a serpent.
As a child he was overly sensitive and thought to be odd until they worked out what a superb performer he could be and started training him.
I'm fairly sure the guy had red hair. :)
It just might have been re-published as a SF masterwork and be a lot older than 5 to 10 years ago, but not sure on that one.

Something just went "click" in my head and I thought "Merro Tree" - so I searched for it and there it was.

The Merro Tree by Katie Waitman.

Very good indeed.

Answered my own question.:)
