*SPOLIERS FROM SERIES 1 & 2*
One thing that gets me interested in Torchwood (and Doctor Who, to some extent), is the passage of time between each episode. Now I don't watch much TV outside of TW and DW, and the things I do watch don't follow the same formula (Top Gear, Have I Got News For You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, David Attenborough things). Indeed, the passage of time between the other programmes is exactly a week. But to me, the time between each Torchwood episode is a very interesting subject. No reason, really, but still...
---
I've nearly finished watching Series 1 again, and I've been making some notes, but I've yet to watch the finale, so I'll probably have a couple of changes I could make tomorrow. But from what I've got, the first series of Torchwood could have taken place over about a six month period. In an episode by episode run-through:
1.01: Everything Changes
First contact. Nothing to report here, other than the fact that the episode takes place over about three days.
1.02: Day One
Less than twenty-four hours after 1.01. Takes place over a few days, again. So that's about a week in total.
1.03: Ghost Machine
Here's where it gets tricky. Gwen still seems rather newbish, but she does look to have really joined the team and been accepted as one of them, so I'd put it at a week or so later, but it's very hard to be sure.
1.04: Lisa
Again, it's very hard to tell, and without Gwen playing a major part, it's made harder. Maybe a week or two. Let's say a month in total.
1.05: Small Worlds
Your guess is a good as mine, so I'll go wit the standard one to two weeks.
1.06: Countrycide
There's a scene in this episode that sees the team discussing their last snog. For Gwen it was Rhys, for Tosh it was Owen (last Christmas, bless), for Owen it was Gwen (in 1.04) and for Ianto it was Lisa (also in 1.04). Jack is... yeah... Now Ianto still seems upset about it, so I'd put the time between 1.04 and 1.06 at a few weeks at most. After said scene, Gwen and Owen go into the forest to gather wood, and Owen accuses Gwen of avoiding him since the kiss. Now, it's mighty hard to avoid someone for a long time, which is another reason I've put the time between 1.04 and 1.06 at a few weeks.
1.07: Greeks Bearing Gifts
Still out in the dark. However, I can say that Gwen seems fine, and in 1.06 she received a gunshot wound to her side, which can take a while to recover from (in a thread Lith made, I think I found out that in modern times, a person who received a GSW can be out of hospital within a week, usually two). So shall we say two weeks? Bringing it to a total of... roughly three months. Which does well to coincide with...
1.08: They Keep Killing Suzie
Suzie is brought back, she has a chat with Jack and Gwen in the interrogation room, asks Jack how long it's been, and Jack says three months. Sherlock Holmes, watch your back! Detective Lenny is in town, and he's good... he's very good!
1.09: Random Shoes
Who cares. No seriously, do you? Random guess, one to two weeks.
1.10: Out of Time
Another random guess, one to two weeks.
1.11: Combat
Now in this episode, Owen is feeling really bad about himself because Diane left him. If we use Ianto as a measure, I'd say that this episode is about one to two, maybe three weeks after 1.10. As a total, we now have four and a half months, ish. Note the wounds that Owen receives at the hands of Janet, our friendly neighbourhood Weevil.
1.12: Captain Jack Harkness
Still to watch this again, but the trailer for it showed Owen alive and well, with no sign of his wounds. So a week is out of the question. He came away from 1.11 with a black eye, and black eyes take seven to ten days to heal, so coupled with his bites and scratches, I'd say 1.12 is two weeks after 1.11.
1.13: End of Days
Carries directly on from 1.12.
---
So in total, we've got around five to six months, give or take a few weeks.
I'll give Series 2 the same treatment in a couple of weeks.
Until then... thoughts?
