At school i borrowed a book from a classmate. I think the title was something like 'A Time Before Again.' The storyline goes something like this (but remember i am trying to recall a book 15 years later!)

To begin with you think it's a fantasy book with Centaurs, Werewolves and Vampires and fantasy creatures and scribers who can write - a long forgotton skill. But it transpires that this is an apocalyptic future. There was an oil spill and scientists released a bacteria which could clean up the spill but the bacteria went out of control and ate all the worlds supply of oil. So nuclear power became the main powersource but people began to die of cancer. So geneticists went crazy and began combining DNA creating fantasy creatures like Centaurs and Unicorns.

It was a brilliant book, i know my summary makes it sound dire but it was really cleverly written and i'm sure my vague memory has distorted it and made it sound awful!! i have been trying to find it again ever since. I would be overcome with gratitude if anyone recognises it and can tell me what it was called! :)

Yes, that was the one I was searching my poor, worn-out memory for, too. I don't think I ever read that volume, but got the second part of the trilogy that referred to it, so I can't guarantee the details either.

It sounds a little bit like an old book called World Enough and Time

Amazon.com: WORLD ENOUGH AND TIME: James Kahn: Books

But I read it so long ago I'm fuzzy on the details and don't remember if the other parts you describe, besides the centaurs, werewolves, and vampires, and the post apocalyptic setting, apply.
That was a trilogy and it was when Vampires ruled and kept humans as cattle or a food supply the other two books were Times Dark Laughter & Timefall.

Yes, that was the one I was searching my poor, worn-out memory for, too.

I had some ado to come up with the title, as well. Fortunately, I remembered it was something from a poem by Andrew Marvell, and a quick glance at "To His Coy Mistress" produced the phrase I was looking for.

OH THANK YOU-THANK YOU-THANK YOU!!!

That's the one, i'm such an idiot where did i get 'A Time Before Again' ha ha! No wonder i could never find it.

I didn't know it was a trilogy, i'm going to order all three.

I'm absolutely thrilled thank you again! :)
