Hi Folks
I have just joined this forum and never having written or read one before, not quite sure if I have got the protocol right. I am looking to trace a book on time travel I read some thirty years ago. I had in my mind that it might have been called Time Masters, or Masters of Time but I found a book with that title and it wasn't the one. All I can remember was that people travelled in Time Kettles and that there was a big block of years that they could not get to (several hundred years from memory). I do remember that it was a very well written book and dealt with time anachronisms very neatly. If anyone does know of this book I would be extremely grateful. Also, if I have posted this in the wrong place I would be glad of a steer.

Many thanks

Hi, fishend and welcome to the Chrons. It's a long while since I've read it, but I'm pretty certain the book you're looking for is Isaac Asimov's classic The End of Eternity.

Hope that helps.

I'm going to be the person in this thread who knows they've read that book yonks ago but can't remember anything useful about it. If I had more time I would check out that Asimov title to see if it rings any more bells, but I don't - I have to go to work - so I will just say there is a good chance it could be Asimov, I read heaps of his books ages ago, but seeing as I can't remember enough about it I can't say for sure! Aren't I helpful.

Well, in The End of Eternity, the time travellers (Eternals) travelled through time using devices called kettles but could not reach beyond the 70,000th century, so had no idea what lay there. Nor could they go back before the 27th century, when the kettles were invented.

All of which seems to fit the description; so if this isn't the one fishend's after, I'd be surprised

Thanks for your replies Ian, from what you say I am sure this is the right book - so sure in fact that I have ordered it from Amazon. Will confirm it is the right book when it arrives.

Brillaint Ian, the book has arrived and it is the one! Many, many thanks, this has concluded a 25+ year search for the book, I am so grateful. For anyone who has not read it, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Glad to be of help, fishend! :)

You're right, it's a tremendous read and has long been considereds one of Asimov's best by many critics.
