Grateful for some help to identify this novel as I can remember neither the title nor author.

It is the story of a young man surviving in a post-disaster world. He may be travelling West in the former USA. He meets a trader with an armoured wagon, a side-kick/helper/armourer and a young daughter who is a fine horsewoman. The hero and daughter are out riding (I think?) and return to see the wagon attacked and destroyed.
The rest of the story is about their survival together as they get caught by Winter before he can get to his brother's ranch. They butcher range cattle, meet a bear, dig a home into the side of a hill, scavenge from an abandoned farm, seek seed grain (I think) and conceive a child.

Does anyone recall the title?

It sounds like it might be something in the Pelbar cycle by Paul O. Williams, but it's been so long since I read those books, they all run together in my mind.

Thank you for the reply but I suspect not as in this novel 'the Fall' seemed quite recent wheras the Pelbar cycle is apparently
... a series of novels set in North America about a thousand years after a "time of fire", in which the world was nearly totally depopulated.
The book I am trying to recall may have been written for a young adult audience; it had that flavour.

I read it. I remember the plot as well and my opinion that it was a realistic depiction of a post-apocalyptic in which survival for a single person without support of a basis or a group is incredibly difficult.

Only, i am not remembering the title, either

It sounds like a Niven, or a Pournelle, or someone with their gist

Could that be footfall or Lucifer hammer? Something having to do with an asteroid falling?
