Hello.

I once read a fantasy novel whose author and title I can't remember, and I'm in the mood to reread it and any others in its series. I either used to own it and have lost it over the years (probably by loaning it to someone and not getting it back) or else someone loaned it to me once. The book was probably written in the 1980s or 90s.

All I can remember is the basic plot: the fairie world abuts our world in several places, and there are certain gates or openings whereby one can pass from here to there. There are Sidhe kingdoms near Ireland, England, France and the surrounding continent and for some reason, near the USA as well.

One kingdom of the Sidhe in particular is quite close to a region in the American southern states (I forget which state: one of the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee or Kentucky). In this state is a mountain that also exists in the Sidhe kingdom and is a sacred place to them or is important somehow. The mountain, in this world, had been owned by a particular family for generations, but part of it had been recently sold and a local rich man was planning to build a resort there. This caused the king of that particular fairie kingdom to go to war against humans. There was also something about his kingship being under contention at the time, with someone else striving to take over. I'm not sure but I think this king may have been Mananan MacLir: he was identified with one of the old Celtic gods, anyway.

A small group of (mostly) young people (early 20s), some of whom had been to the Sidhe world and had friends there, learned about what was happening and set about to stop the war as well as the construction of the resort, using various magical means as well as whatever firearms they could get their hands on, using special ammunition that used iron rather than lead. They were also helped by an older man, a bit of a hermit who was part Cherokee but practised some unnamed form of ceremonial magic. The grandfather of one of the people was involved as well: I believe he was wounded by some magical weapon or power.

I remember one scene where they discovered that one of the gates to the Sidhe-world might be located at a site where a Ren Faire was in progress so several of them cobbled together some period-looking garb and attended.

I think it was in this same book where there was another episode where several of them entered the fairie realm to rescue one of their Side friends who was being held prisoner in a small cage made of iron.

The book culminated in a battle against the Sidhe that took place on the mountain, a battle in which more than one of the heroes was killed including a young (13 or 14 year old) runaway boy who had joined them.

Does this ring any bells with anyone? Who was the author and what was the book called?

Yes, Tom Deitz, he wrote a great deal about Athens Ga (where I went to UGA and read his books) Great reads as I remember!
