Yo yo yo yo yo, everyone!!!! Just got back from Iraq after a 4 month tour and am glad to be on the threads again :p

To start off right away: We hear all through the series how Lords and heirs sailed off to Valryia and some sailed west and disappeared. If Dany goes to Asshaii or even further east, which is what seems she must do according to Quaithe, will she do what Columbus (and others) did and sail one way to get to another??? Or will she go to Ashaii and then just sail or whatever back all the way west to get back home????

Also, will we get a description in detail of Valryia, the Doom and will anyone actually go there while this series continues??

Well, good to be back. Hope to hear from u guys. :)

CS, Congratulations on coming back safe.

I don't have any real views on this east/west thing. But we do know that Euron's been to Valyria and into the far west... if anyone has circumvented the globe (or at least knows how to possibly circumvent the world of ASOIAF) it's Euron. Victarion could concievably meet up with Dany in Slaver's Bay and then go east instead of west to the Free Cities. The Lannisters, the Martells, the Tyrells, and Littlefinger will be expecting Dany to launch her invasion from the Free Cities. Mayhaps the Black Fleet could bring Dany to Westeros from the west. I dunno.

I'd always read that to mean Dany would sail East, circumnavigate the world and attack the Seven Kingdoms from the West.
But then GRRM does like to drop these little hints and then do the exact opposite just to confound us.

All I took it to mean was that before she went West to retake the Seven Kingdoms she would have to go East and learn how to be a ninja or a shadowbinder or something novel that they don't have in Westeros.

That runs in contradiction to everything, Dany is Dany, for a sixteen year old she is an extremely complete person. all she is learning now are the subtleties of long term government and dirty politics... and dragon lure. in d&d terms (sorry) she already has a profession.
She is collecting armies and followers and thinking about the conquest. I think the prophecy is to be taken literally, she will have to go east, and go back, the reason... probably something to do with dragons.
If the SOI&F world is not flat Ill be very crossed.

When I said ninja and shadowbinder I didn't really mean ninja and shadowbinder :D I meant what I said second, something novel. She will need to go East and she will need to acquire some piece of knowledge or maybe something for her dragons. She will definitely need to learn something because at the moment she is only half a queen in my eyes.

What more must she do, I implore, to be a full queen? I thought the final step was turning back to properly rule the cities she had 'freed'. I guess doing a good job making sure those cities function well is the last test for her, in my mind.

Completely offtopic and all, but the magic is slowly returning to the world right.
I was thinking the Bronze Yohn Royce runes might actually start to work or something like that.

However, where she may find that knowledge is not East but rather West of Slavers Bay, in old Valyria. That is where she may go with Victarion, his ships, his horn and the crew that has been to old Valyria with Euron.

So, to go West, she must go West.

I don't think she'd learn anything about dragons in Valyria. It's a smoking, uninhabited and completely destroyed ruin. Well, inhabited by demons, which is more or less uninhabited. Although, Euron claimed to have been there and brought back the horn, among other things.

I took Quaithe's words to mean going to Asshai. Apparently they've had dragons all this time, or still know much of dragons, in Asshai-by-the-Shadow.

I never thought of the world in ASOIAF as one that could be circumnavigated. I somehow do not think it is.

My feeling from AFFC was that Euron had circumnavigated the globe. Hmmm, looks like another reread is in the works.

Yes, I believe he has since he was gone for years.

While Dany may to Asshai, my gut has always told me that she needs to make a pitstop in Valyria. Especially when she dees the dragon horn that Victarion is bringing to her and learns where it came from.

Also, I am sure that Jon Connington, Young Griff, Quentyn and Tyrion will have some influence on where she goes and when.

That's a good question. The assumption is that he does but GRRM never actually tells us that it was loaded onto the ships that Victarion is taking to Danny.

Well for one thing, Victarion hates Euron. He has already said he wants to bring Dany back for himself, so who knows what he's going to do when he finds her.

Who are Jon Connington and Young Griff? I have not heard of these people.

Jon Connigton was the best friend of Rhaegar. He eventually became Hand to Aerys but was later on banished after he was defeated on the battlefield. I *think* he was last seen in Braavos but is currently rumored to be leading a band of warriors.

Young Griff is the second-in-command of that group of warriors and believed to be Connington's son. Boaz basically answered the same question for me a couple of weeks ago.
