Trying to find book name or series

I read a book long ago (as I'm sure you hear a lot), I know a lot of details just not the exact name. I thought it was something like "Dragonflyers" or something to that lines. but if not here a lot of details about what happens in it.

It starts out with some, i think an, assasin who is hired to either kidnapped or kill some child of a wealthy man. He ends up taking the kid and a very scrawny butler with him and they end up on a quest of some sort. The world(s) are made up of floating islands the big ones in the middle where the main body of "normal" people live. Then the islands above were where the lords lived and at the very bottom was some sort of "portal to other worlds or something. But there was tale of a very powerful magic people who have vanished who could tame the dragons or something. at the end the group ends up traveling down to the "portal." and you also find out that the scrawny butler is one of the powerful magic users who had vanished.

If you could help at all to tell me the series/trilogy and/or the name of the book I would be very appreciative. I've been looking for it for the past year or so.

that sounds similer to the death gate cycle, by margaret weis and tracy hickman
i believe there are 7 books in the series
don't know if that is what your looking for
but the few lines about the plot you mentioned sounds like weiss and hickmans series

That's definitely the Death Gate Cycle and you were close with the name, the first book is titled Dragon Wing .
