I have searched all over and finally found this site. Please help!

Book was about a boy who was born under a certain sign or something, so the emperor ordered him killed. Of course he wasn't killed but hidden away. FF to his teenage years and he joins a circus that travels between planets doing shows and recruiting others because they are really a resistance force seeking to destroy the emperor.

Now for the key part I remember: There is this technology that involves these kinds of mirrors that are really like transporters. Each mirror is connected to another mirror somewhere else and when you step through it you end up at the other mirror. Except if you're not careful to get your whole body through, whatever is sticking out beyond the mirrors edge gets cut off, so it can be used as a weapon. I believe they had a connected mirror in orbit around the planet so whoever went through died instantly in space.

Anyway, I read it a LONG time ago, I forget the title and never really knew the author, but it must have been really good because I can't stop thinking about it and it's driving me mad so any help is appreciated. Hopefully that's enough info.
