Inspirational places

I often find that the best boost for creativity comes from visiting special places, for example I have just had a day by the River Alde in Suffolk and have come away with several ideas and images that I will incorporate into the novel I am writing. I previously found places such as Wastwater in Cumbria and the Helford River in Cornwall great sources of inspiration; I wondered what other spots members found helpful in the writing or artwork? Any good suggestions, especially of a less well known places?!

Well, I live in Oley, Pennsylvania, and here there is a tree called The Sacred Oak. It was a sacred place to the American Indians and is supposedly the tallest Oak in the state. Every time I see it, I don't feel awe inspired much the same way any landmark would make you- except this one's in my home village, so it's more profound. I've never incorporated it into a story, but it has got me thinking before.

living on the edge of the Peak District, you can't help but be inspired by the rolling hills and breathtaking vistas, especially up in the Derwent Valley and around Edale - one road in & out, hills on all sides...

more recently, i went to Marrakech for a week. a right eye-opener, i tell thee. it'll definitely be making an appearance in my writing.

I love the mountains, and such rolling country gives me a sense of peace and joy. In particular, I love Cumbria (home to William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter), and there is also a place in North Wales called Betws-y-Coed. It is a little commercialised now though, but I think it retains a lot of its fantasy character that I fell in love with, in particular the Glyders and the Ogwen valley.

Of course, there is also Kent ;)

I went to university in Swansea and there was a bench next to the beach that was the best place to sit and think. Great place for inspiration, I'd be there now if I could. Wearing a really thick coat. With coffee. And scotch.
