Does anyone recall a SF story in an American B/W magazine in the 1970s where the plot went something like -

"Spacemen/women with lots of internal / home troubles crash-land on seemingly uninhabited planet - come across shining white edifice/city - entering through massive gate/arch they find themselves in a massive white marble hall, filled with statues of aliens and one or two humans such as M ohammed ; J esus ;
B uddha and other great philosophers / sages / prophets - at the end of this hall is a throneroom where sits an enormous tentacled being - thinking this creature has killed the city's inhabitants, they shoot the creature dead, at which point the light dawns that they have actually kiled the Supreme Being!!!"

This story has haunted me since I was a small boy. I would love to be able to find the magazine it was published in, as it has had such a profound influence on my life and thinking since, and I lost my only copy years ago.

Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks in anticipation!

Sounds like a star trek plot. When the light dawned was the dead guy's last line :-

Hi there!

It was definitely written and drawn in a b/w mag in the form of Marvel's "Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction" 1975 - 76.

The story I remember had no Star Trek Characters that I remember. Of course, the story might have been rehashed by either TV or mag from an original short story.

All the best and thanks for the quick reply! ;-)=
