Just got notice from Hippocampus Press that the 2-volume set of the Lovecraft-Howard correspondence is now scheduled to come out some time in 2009:

The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard - Hippocampus Press

Having read several of these letters, I'd say that they are a treat for both the lover of Howard and Lovecraft, whether their fiction or otherwise; they contain a wealth of thought, debate, argument, and no little fantastic whimsies and sidelines. Howard's letters also contain a lot of his own renderings of the folklore and legendry of the Southwest he so loved, often embellished or given that special Howardian turn that makes them as fascinating as his own original fiction.

Definitely one I suggest to anyone interested in either writer....

This was just a general notice sent out that the project is moving forward and has been given a date (though, as with all publishing, that date is subject to change, of course). Check their site for any other news, would be my suggestion....

Thanks for the heads up. As you know I'm a keen fan of both of these writers so this is one I'll be ordering.

It's good to see that Rusty Burke is on board, I've corresponded with him in the past and found him to be most helpful. With Joshi this should prove to be an interesting project.

Considering the way the volumes of correspondence by these writers have been handled, with extensive, informative annotations and the like, I can't see this being other than an excellent investment for fans of either, let alone both....

Have you got the first two volumes of Howard's letters?

The REH foundation is putting out a 3 volume set of his letters if that's what you are referring to? Either way I don't have a collection of Howard's letters.

I might just focus on purchasing these 2009 editions with Lovecraft as it will be a case of killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

In a limited way, yes. However, the volumes of Howard's correspondence contains a lot more than his letters to HPL -- there are letters there to others of the WT crowd, as well as a bushel of correspondents outside that crew... and REH's correspondence is often as fascinating, in its own way, as that of HPL....

Agreed, I was referring more to consolidation of costs, the Aussie dollar being sadly very much weaker now than what it was even 2 months ago. I may still pursue those at some stage if they're still available but it won't be this year.
