I'm really hoping you great people in this forum can help me. I'm searching (obviously) for a Science Fiction Fantasy (again - duh!) book. Please, help!

What I can tell you:

-The book is newer, published within the last decade, and most likely within the last 4-6 years.
-The author may be newer, I believe this book may have been his first.
-It was definitely planned as the first in a series, I read on a forum (at the time) that a second in the series was already underway.

The book was based around a world in which the inhabitants each had a sort of elemental "spirit" bonded to them (these spirits may have had individual names - but not sure). These spirits were semi-autonomous, and some people had more than one "spirit" bonded to them. The main character was a boy (young man) who was the only known person to ever have been born (or grown up) without a single spirit. The boy is often angry about this and the majority of the story is the boy learning to cope without these "spirits" to help him. The boy's father had two of these "spirits." The beginning of the book starts off with the boy in semi-ignorance of the world around him, and as the story progresses he gets caught up in a feud.

The book does switch point of views to other characters, and one such is a female scout in an army (to whose or what country I can not remember) who has an air elemental based "spirit." Because of said "spirit" she either has the ability to fly or something close. The gist of the story is whatever country the protagonist is from enters a sort of war/battle, and the only real solid piece of the book I remember is people in a fort, and they gather together all the people with the earth element "spirits" to raise the walls of the fort.

The book ends happily, and with the protagonist being congratulated by a king (I think a king) and ends with the knowledge that the boy will be going to some sort of a college to study.

Please help - I tried searching Macmillan for the book, and either passed it, or couldn't find it. I know I took it out from my local library so I tried searching some keywords there, and came up with nothing. I even tried searching publishers to see if I could remember what the website looked like.

Last bit of information, I do believe the publisher had their own forums. Though I may be wrong and it could have been a fansite forum. Regardless - if no one knows of this Book/Author then at least help with names of Publishers whose websites have forums, thank you!

Again, thank you in advance for any help! Or if you sort of remember the story - offer more of it so others can help! Thank you!

I do believe that is the book. I'm near certain. And I guess I was way off my mark when I said the author may be new.

I won't know for 100% until I am able to check it out though.

Thank you very much for your help!
