Below is a prologue for a story I am writing that is loosely based on the Iliad. What I would like to know from others, is whether or not the Prologue makes you want to read further.

Speak to me, O Muse. Speak to me of Rage.

Sing to me a dactylic hymn of Fury

of the son of the Nephilim. Sing to me,

of Achilles.

Achilles, terrible Achilles, blunting His sword on the bodies of the wretched.

Does he come?

Its cold and my bound legs chafe against the frayed straps.

Has He brought endless chaos against those who keep me from the sky?

Do the brave hurl their bodies at the walls, and their souls at the Void?

Speak to me!

For nine months I have lain on this table.

I no longer feel the pain of my palms nailed to the rails.

Do heroes yield their bodies to the dogs and the vultures and the worms?

Please.

Or shall I remain captive

While rusted teeth tear the skin of my arms

And cold hands open my thighs in experiments?

My eyes are dried open.

Muse? Please?

Speak to me.

As far as your style and intention go, this is sound and pretty clear - but I personally couldn't get through an epic. I couldn't do Iliad, Paradise Lost or any of the classics that are hailed as great.

My take on epics are that they were probably fine for the times, but art has to move with the culture to hold my interest. This is no reflection on the style or your work - just my tastes.

However, most importantly, you have to do what you love. For the little I know about this kind of work, it seems like a good prologue - very dark, tragic start, intriguing, making me want to know where it goes from there.
Whatever your style of choice, this has the right ingredients for an opening.

The bulk of the story will be written in standard prose. Only the prologue (and perhaps an interlude or two) will be written in this style. My intention is to draw a clear line to Homer's Iliad.

Thanks for your comments.

I have to say i enjoyed the way things were put in the begining. I was interested to see more. So sounds like a good story for now.

Thanks! I am looking to strengthen the ending pieces a bit. Hopefully I can re post it soon.
