Hi all.

Just a heads up that TOR will be publisihing a retrospective on Gene's work, the first of its kind, in early 2009 called: The Best of Gene Wolfe: A Definitive Retrospective of His Finest Short Fiction.

I don't know if I'll get it as I probably have those stories in various other collections already but it might be of interest to some members....:)

This book will be out March 2007 and despite what I said I'll probably purchase it.

Well I bought the book last week and it looks good, although I've only now just decided to dip into it. A lot of his finest shorter fiction is represented here including Fifth Head Of Cerberus, Island of Doctor Death & Other stories, Petting Zoo, Detective Of Dreams etc...

In fact there's 31 stories selected by Gene.

Thanks for the impressions Gollum. Once I'm done working my way through Gene's novels I intend to delve in to his short stories.

Well the retrospective is a little dear but you can always wait for a PB edn. plus the following are pretty good:

Storeys From The Old Hotel
- personally selected by Gene as some of his favourites and one of the best collections I've read.
Starwater Strains - SF stories
Strange Travellers - Best stories of the 90s by Gene
Innocents Abroad - New Fantasy stories.
Book Of Days - An older collection but displaying Gene's evolving brilliance.

I admittedly haven't read all of these (own them) but aim to get through them this year.

Cheers.

Thanks for the list Gollum! I was a bit confused about the multiple short story collections.

I've just finished reading 'The Best of Gene Wolfe', and I thought it was a great collection. I've not read any of Wolfe's stuff before, but I can see why people rave about him! Definitely one for the re-reading pile. :)

Gollum - did you do a review of this in the end?

No. I'm afraid to say I've not read it yet, which seems amazing given my like of anything Wolfe but there you have it!......

I do thank you for the reminder though, as I will definitely endeavour to read and review the collection before the end of the year.

Cheers.

Sorry for bringing back an older thread, but I just got this for my birthday and am starting to read it. Does Wolfe have many short stories not in this collection? I am going to be spending a lot of time on his novels, but want to eventually go through all his short stories as well.

Yes there's quite a few but this is an excellent representative collection. I have most of Gene's short story collections of which there is at least a dozen in existence.

His short stroy collections are not too difficult to source except for his 'early" collection which may be purchased provided you have a few hundred US spare in cash. I have a copy.
