Apologies if this has already been brought up

I've just finished reading a Feast of Crows - is it just me or are there a lot of characters (most just mentioned) called Jeyne?

i think i can remember at least three.... it is a bit confusing...
first, jeyne poole, who is thought to be false arya... jeyne from the inn.... jeyne westerling, jon's widow...

agreed, but it's difficult enough to remember who's whos bannerman, son, ally, enemy, who conquered what, went where, killed that one,or was killed by this one etc etc :D if you forget what happened to some character and someone with the same name appears in similar environment, it's not so easy not to confuse them. when brienne first said the name jeyne, i thought she meant jeyne westerling or even jeyne poole, even though i wasn't sure she knew her. even when she said her last name i wasn't so sure it was some different girl :D i guess i'm trying to find connections where there aren't any :D
that appendix at the end is quite helpful, but is there some chronology or summary of most important events, like,
- danny wed khal drogo
- khal drogo dies. with remnants of khalasar she goes to (can't remember where)
- conquers something and gains this and that ally
-conquers something else and gains ...
- ...

ok,ok, not for this topic. but must admit that since i've read the first three books a long ago i was very grateful that for reading affc it didn't matter much that i forgot most of previous events, since i was able to catch up who is ally to whom. mostly.

Okay, looks like it's my turn to be the research monkey....

According to Tower of the Hand: An Encyclopedia of Ice and Fire, there are fifteen Jeynes... not all of them currently living, but fifteen overall in Martin's writings of Westeros.

Jeyne is not even the most popular name on the J page. That would be Jon with twenty-one listings.

No other name comes close to these two. There are nine Pates and nine Roberts. And seven Wills. If you add in the variations of Will, i.e. Willamen, Willem, William, and Willis, you'll find twenty-one total.

By the way, the most numerous family name is Frey. "...field an army out of his pants..." That still kills me!

I'm guessing that by the end of ASOIAF, those named Frey will be mostly confined to the history books.

(But on the other hand, GRRM is always full of surprises....)

The Freys will be around, there are too many of them, with too many connections to kill them all off. Besides, not all freys are bad. Olyvar Frey, Robb's squire was a good boy, many children are too young too have done any great wrongs, and so on.

I hadn't noticed the other names, but I guess it was because I was reading it so quickly and just kept coming across Jeynes!

Can't wait for the next installment!

I think using the same names is fine - in fact, it was one of the many thigs I noted that set the series apart from the first. I think I only get confused discussing the books here, rather than when I'm actually reading them...

Luckily GRRM puts at the end of all his books the list of all houses and who they are aligned with along with the characters we meet in the books.

He must like the name Jeyne for some reason. Funny there is no character named Parris. We all know he modelled Tyrion after himself or rather this is his favourite character that he associates mostly with. I wonder who represents his beloved Parris. Hopefully not poor Shea.

pk, I only remembered two Jeynes before I looked it up on The Tower of the Hand... your memory was better than mine.

TK, very interesting observation regarding the relationship between GRRM and Tyrion and then projecting that to Parris. Hmmmmm... Does this mean a character romantically linked to Tyrion will represent Parris? Would he write Parris' character to be Parris as he sees Parris or would he write the character to be Parris as she sees herself? I think almost any character could be Parris... Let's assume she'd be associated with a female character... Not knowing Parris, I'd say she could be anyone... except the witches Cersei, Lysa, and Arianne.

If you mean publicly aligned you're right, but it's hard to imagine that Lord Petyr Baelish and Varys are truly aligned with, say House Baratheon (whether before or after Robert's demise).

I haven't posted in a while, but I think I may have $.02 to add to this bit.

If I remember correctly from the more biographical portions of Dreamsongs, Parris was one of his first loves and that he got married after that, unsuccessfully. So maybe if Parris has a homolog in the book, it would be Tysha.

Tom, welcome back. Hmmmm... analogous to Tysha, Tyrion's first love.

Did you guys ever read James Herriot's works? He tried to carefully conceal the identities of the real people that his characters were based upon... while maintaining an accuracy of circumstances in which his characters interacted. I remember reading that he mentioned that only one person ever correctly guessed whom she was in his stories.

tsw, I'll have to check out the links. Thanks for providing them.

And if you haven't, please do.

I've read all of them, more than once, and they're some of the most enjoyable books I've ever read.

And I own the first three seasons of the BBC production.

/end Herriot plug/

Yes, Tysha may be a better fit than Shae. Although I have never met either GRRM or Parris so cannot speculate. Thanks for the links TSW.

And, Arianne is NOT a witch! She is just a frustrated and misguided youth. Frustrated from her perceived lack of action by her father and misguided by the companty she kept, Ser Oakheart and Darkstar in particular.
