All right. I cannot stand it any more. It seems the majority on this forum read GRRM. Well, I didn't. I tried to find it to my library, but I couldn't find anything. Are there any books in French editions ?

Ericka gave a lot of his writings. But unfortunately, I cannot buy all of them. So, if I have to buy something, what do you recommend as a must read and have on my shelves ?

Please have pity of my pockets and gave only the best of his writings. If possible with some comments of your choices.

In French, GRRM is available in J'ai lu Poche collection. On the web you can have them through Amazon.fr and possibly on the regular amazon site.
 
I suspect I'm one of the few people here to have read something by Martin outside of A Song of Ice and Fire - specifically, Sandkings, a collection of SF short stories. The stories themselves were an original and intersting mix of horrific and mythpoeic elements in settings that were, for the most part, so far-future as to seem ancient. The prose however was ponderous, almost top-heavy, as if Martin was trying too hard to mine the Gene Wolfe vein. His narrative skills have certainly improved with time, and if you enjoy drawn-out, complex epic fantasies, you may as well pick up A Game of Thrones and plunge into ASOIAF.

Of his other novels, a friend whose opinions I respect has said that Fevre Dream is a rather good, and unusual vampire novel.
 
I would steal go for SoIaF. I read fever dream (admittedly in the Hebrew translation) and found it to be well written but inferior to the song

"A Game of Thrones" is the first book in the A Song of Fire and Ice series. Probably *the* one to watch.

I know precisely what you mean, though, Alexa - I'm tempted to buy the third volume, but here in the UK they split it in two, and it simply kills the sale when the two-halves are not present on the same shelf.
 
I have read Fevre Dream and it is a very good take on the vampire mythos... but GRRM's masterpiece is A Song of Ice and Fire.

A must read for all fantasy fans... mature fans fans, that is. Twelve year olds stay away!!!!! This is fantasy for grown-ups!!!! :p

Correction, I, Brian- The first book in the series is "A Game of Thrones." And if you want to save on money, I say buy it used or find a friend who's willing to go halvesies with you.:)
 
You're absolutely right - I'm getting dizzy with all the different titles. :)

I have the opportunity to buy a seria in French edition, Le trône de Fer, 9 volumes from Pygmalion, Éditions Flammarion. I hope this is "A Game of Thrones."
They are quite expensive, 21.5 euro each.:eek:

But, I don't care. I already spent $ 400 for Robin Hobb trilogies.

I'm afraid I'm not a vampire's fan, so I'll let out of my interest those writings, no matter how GRRM may be good of it.
 
I would say, personally, that Fevre Dream (the "vampire" one) is his best work. But then, I'm not such a raving fan of aSoIaF;)

I wouldn't have considered myself a fan of vampire books before I read Fevre Dream, and I still don't, none of the others I've read have been very good at all, but I still enjoyed FD a lot:) It would be worth a try, especially if you can find it in a library somewhere...

I think it is, but check Amazon.com first, you can access to books in french and even with the shipping it would be cheaper.
 
I've just read the Thrones books for the same reason and I would just like to say thay are great.
He is the first fantasy writer that I've read where there is not just good and bad but each character has their good and bad points.
 
"Fevre Dream" was great! It was a completely different take on vampires, and the main character was surprisingly very likeable. I suppose if you're not into vampires, you might want to skip it, but I think everyone should read it.
 
I haven't read anything else by Martin. I have heard good things about Fevre Dream and I would like to check it out. I just have to add it to the list of Marco books I want to read, I just have too much on my plate at the moment to read anything.
 
Fevre Dream is what got me into GRRM in the first place. Personally one of the best books I have ever read. Also Skin Trade is a cracking read as well. (You can read that in GRRM a RRetrospective and Night Visions) Since then I have bought all he has ever written. Also turned into a bit of a collecter and have now got several first editions of Fevere Dream, Tuf Voyaging amd AGOT as well as the AGOT ARC - Holy Grail version :) - All signed by the great man himself. Currently about to start Feast for Crows - but have forgotten the previous books and so am re-reading again.
 
Both are the same, one is just a newer release. And they are both the Graphic Novel version.

If you want the novella, check out the Legends anthologies, by Robert Silverberg.

Yup - what he said :)

Legends II by Robert Silverberg also had "The Sworn Sword" which was part 2 of Dunc & Egg's adventures.

It was ace :D

Windhaven blows. Excuse the pun. I hated the book a real snore fest. Ild say his weakest book to date. He co wrote it with turtledove I think.
