I am trying to get the name /author of a short story I read at school in the 70s.
I think the people lived underground or in cubicles and everything started to break down, so that eg a piece of music would develop a fault but they were so brainwashed that they came to think that was the way it was. I know it isn't much to go on .

Hehe finally I have found a story I know. The title you are looking for is:
"The Machine Stops" by E. M. Forster

The story is one of the best I have read and one of my favorite. It is set in the future I think, where part of humanity lives underground and depends entirely on technology to live. Eventually everything starts malfunctioning but the people are too dependent to take heed...
