So I've been trying to wrap my head around how the real powers of Westeros fit together into the grand scheme of things. There seems to be a general consensus of the epic battle of Ice vs Fire, good vs evil. But we all know that GRRM isn't about your standard black vs white. The supposed good guys birth shadows from their bellies, and raise the dead to continue vengeance upon the Lannisters. There's always something going on behind the scenes. Therefore I'd like to start a discussion on how the various gods and godesses fit into the main plotline and what their motivations are.
The way I see it there are four major dieties and powers in westeros: Rh'llor the Lord of Light, The Great Other (god of Ice and Death), The Old Gods of the North, and the Seven Who Are One. I include the Seven only because they are the dominant faith in Westeros yet so far have not shown any supernatural power. Other dieties of note: The Drowned God (Greyjoys) and the Many Faced God (Arya's new friends in Braavos).
There's a few points I'd like to make before passing the baton off.
The Other seems to be in direct conflict with the Old Gods and Rh'llor. Melsandre is the obvious main protagonist of Rh'llor vs the Other, I won't go into more detail with that. The Old Gods seem to be voicing their desires through Bran, showing him the truth behind the Others north of the wall and asking him to live on so he may face this threat as one of their champions.
But what about The Seven? They have been relatively complacent. Marwyn "the crazy maester" seems to be the only one concerned with the current state of events. The higher ups are even to the point to where they would silence any who question their authority or upset the balance of things. Are they a bunch of fakes, just a gaggle of scared old men? Do the Seven have any power at all? The only show of power i see is the rebirth of the Seven pointed warriors. How will they fit into the grand scheme of things?
Lastly, Varys and Illyrio have been working to destablize Westeros for the eventual invasion of Dany/ Viserys. But it seems this destabilization benefits The Other as well. Would it be very outlandish to consider that the Other has agents throughout Westeros, with that same aim to destabilize the continent to make its invasion that much easier to succeed? I sincerely believe Varys when he relates his story about despising anything involving magic. But who else is attempting to destabilize Westeros and cause chaos?
