Sorry, brother. Collage... and meander is either a verb or adverb. I can live with poor grammar in posts (heck, I'm doing it now), but mispellings in titles drive me insane. It's one of my double standards that makes my world go 'round.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out that there is a whole entire forum out there (just the other side of the Wall, really...) devoted to everything and anything not aSoIaF. Do some exploring, seriously.

The point being, if it isn't a thread about aSoIaF I'll probably have to move out there anyway, so you might as well get out and about on your own...

I'll take this moment to type my own thought ....

I can't stand when someone puts something on the forum and gets corrected or told what to do or how to do it by someone else out there. I'm not pointing fingers, but its a personal annoyance of mine that people so freely do this all the time. Correction of spellings, punctuation or even what to post. Not to get personal with anyone (and using myself as an example in this point) no one on this forum knows me in real life enough to tell me what or how to do something and after knowing me I highly doubt they would. Besides that, the people that do that need to ******* chill the **** out. Stop being so god damn technical on a ******* internet post. If i want to share something with specific people on a forum I enjoy thats NOT about a bunch of god damn paperback books, then I'll friggin do it. I don't eat, breathe, sleep , **** and **** about an IMAGINARY book series, sorry. I would go on and on about this but it would only include me swearing more and trading words with people who I am sure will only act smartassy because we are all behind a computer.

That being said, anyone who doesnt like what I post then there are two things I recommend.

1. Don't read them.

2. Kiss my ass.

While sympathizing to a certain extent, this is the risk that you take every time you post on any forum, CS.
The only way not to be criticised is not to post, or to just say things like 'I agree', and 'Yes it is'. Growing a thicker skin and modifying your sense of humour are also necessary...

I'd point out here that Culhwch is a moderator here, and was merely doing his job, which was to point out that threads that are not relevant to a forum heading are liable to be moved to a more suitable one.
This not only keeps the individual author forums from being cluttered up by non-specific posts, but means that your own thread would reach a much wider audience. There are people here who never go anywhere near the GRRM forum, and would never read it otherwise, so this actually works to your benefit.:)

That being said, anyone who doesn't like what I post then there are two things I recommend.

1. Don't read them.

2. Kiss my ass.

Well, solution one is impractical, as you're ask people to make a decision without any evidence of liking/not liking your views..
The second one is just offensive, and I recommend you read the Rules.

Having said all this, CS, please don't think that I'm getting at you in any way. All I'm saying, is that there's always a critic, and there are better ways of dealing with it than sounding off.:D
 
CS, I should have PM'd you. I've fired up some heat that did not need to be here. I apologize. It was not my intention to be a jerk. Before, I'd use sarcasm to try and get my point across... I'm now trying to be more honest in my approach.

You know, at first glance I thought the title was about House Manderly... I'm sorry I missed the play on words.

I understand that there is a vast difference between a couple of misspelled words and a complete lack of any attempt at grammar or spelling. I misspell often here. Many of my posts are edited for typos. Probably many of you have noticed that I tend to string together run-on sentences by using multiple periods... that's just me.

For example, here's a post from SFF today...
nup sansa will live and i disagree the fact tat robb was gunna die could be seen clear as day cos he was too good to be true (kicking the lannisters butts) and when dany finally arrives it woulve meant she waould have been fighting a character who was good and it just wouldnt have fit into the story........also we never got a pov off him
If English is the poster's second or third language or if the poster is seven years old, then I should cut him some slack.

That being said, we are discussing literature. It seems that there should be some degree of an attempt at clarity. Why are we reading? Why do we become engrossed in written stories? Do we have any love for language? If we don't protect our literary history and pass it on to the next generation, then we were not deserving of these tales in the first place.

Everyone will have different levels of expectations and differing standards of what they'll accept as readable. Professor Tolkien might think my attempts at syntax are unacceptable... (that thought scares me). I'm not sure exactly what constitutes proper form in writing... it's kind of like the opinion of Justice Potter Stewart on obscenity in film,
"I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it..."
Capitalizing the first letters of the first words in sentences is a great beginning...

If this strikes you guys as an elitist attitude, I'd gladly hear other views.
 
Ok, I cooled off a bit and perhaps I should explain my rant:

It truly wasn't directed at anyone in particular so perhaps I should have pointed out that it was not Cul or Boaz, both whom I have enjoyed banter with in many posts.

Problem was smaller things, like people being so strict when a thread moves off topic or constantly pointing out punctuation or grammer. Key word is constantly there. My spelling when written is far from good, by the way.

Pyan, ur completely right in everything u said and I have no defense when I am obviously wrong. :p

A few home issues added into my boiling point. I guess I went off and did the wrong thing at the wrong time. Apologies, truly.

Just click on the little quill and "Quote" box in the bottom right of the post you want to quote, CS - that opens a "New Reply" page, with the post you want to quote already in it. You can edit this as you want.

Alternatively, just copy and paste the bit you want to quote, but surround it with (QUOTE) and (/QUOTE) tags, replacing my round brackets with square ones ([]) or it won't work. Or you can just highlight the pasted bit, and then click on the "Quote" icon on the bar in the answer box...it's the one that looks like a speech bubble.

Although Py has already admirably cleared this up, I just want to add that it was nothing personal, CS. As Py said, just doing my job. If we didn't, I shudder to think what this place (and I mean the entirety of the forum and its thousands upon thousands of threads) would be like - a chaotic shambles, I'm sure...

Besides, this is something I have pointed out in a few threads here in the GRRM section - there is a great big forum out there, and everyone is free to join in. It sometimes seems that the aSoIaFers are a bit of an insular bunch, and don't participate much outside of this little corner, so I just try to gently encourage when and where I can. Mostly because I understand - Martin brought me here too, some three or four years back, and this section of the boards was where I lived, pretty much, until I worked up the nerve to join some threads away from here. My comments weren't aimed at anyone in particular - I was just trying to be welcoming, really.

But in all seriousness, if you want me to ban Boaz, say the word. I have the power and I've been looking for an excuse... [if I used smileys, this might be where I'd put one]

Sigur Ros is an amazing band. All of their music is as epic as this song. I love that commercial. My gf hates it though, as it spoils her image of the song.

And I had no problem understanding slik rik. I agree with his points. Sansa's death is a long shot. But it would be shocking!

Lots of writers invent words. Like Shakespeare. Tolkien invented the word "orc". The best thing about English is that the vocabulary is constantly expanding.

GRRM uses a lot of sentence fragments, and run ons (and profanity) to make his dialogue believable, because that is how people really talk (I've studied linguistics:)).

I don't think polished essay writing is required here, thank God. My spelling is atrocious and in this first draft style format I am inclined to cram way too many ideas in one sentence with some vague but misguided idea of achieving brevity and forgetting the commas that would help with coherence whilst losing subject/verb agreement. We have only need to follow the easy going rules, as enforced by the mods.

Tip: I have been caught in kelp several times. Snap it with your fingers, don't pull. Very soulful song, though.
