Maybe there's already a thread like this one out there, and if that's the case I appologise.

I adore the Vlad Taltos books by Steven Brust. They are some of the wittiest, cleverest and most entertaining fantasy I've ever read. Anyone else who likes them?

The Vlad Taltos books are decent stories. Not great but quite readable. The fact that it's several books long is a plus too since I enjoy extended stories.

Yeah, I kind of liked the jumbled timeline. The way things were mentioned or thought of just like they would be in real life, without any real explanations, and then one or two books later you'd get the full story and go "Ah, so THAT'S what they were talking about!"

Well, I'd have really hated to read those books in the order they were published - it would have been a complete headache. Found these books, when 10 were already published and the last book is following previous ones in logical order. For me, the first books were the best - at some point, when Cawtis eastener freedom and subsequently Taltos fleeing Adrilankha came into play - the story wasn't as captivating as it had been. But the last books (starting with Issola) have been entertaining as hell :D
Khaavern romances have been also fun to read - but the Dumas styled conversations are driving me nuts.

I was introduced to the books as collected works with three or four books in one, and they'd been placed in publication order there so that's how I read them. As I said, I thought it was pretty cool :)

I've tried to get my hands on Issola, but they keep telling me it's out of print. I even contacted the author to ask what happened to it, but according to him it's still printed. It's a mystery...

Have you tried ordering it from Amazon UK?

I read most of the Vlad books in publication order (as they came out) and while it is sometimes a little confusing, the "payoff" when you get backstory for a previously vauge event is quite rewarding.

Of course it only works once ... so i'd say publication order the first time around and chronology order for susbequent visits.

I had much the same reaction to The Pheonix Guard at first - but having read the whole cycle now I think that it was incredibly well done to give such a different voice and rythm to stories told from the non-human POV.

Jhegaala looks interesting, though I haven't been able to finish it yet. Not because of the book but because of time :p. I think that's #11 in the series, isn't Issola # 8 or so?
