I've never been to a convention for anything, but if I do not get deployed I was thinking about going to WorldCon in Quebec. I believe it it is scheduled for next summer. I don't know exactly what it would entail, but I would assume meeting people of like minds and interests as well as the chance to see and meet GRRM.

Anyone else game?

A great big science fiction and fantasy convention, held in Montreal, Quebec, CANADA (Not Quebec City, as that will take you several hours out of your way. It's prettier though). I believe that last year it was in Chicago ("--or Detroit, I don't know..." (sorry for the Jackson Brown reference)).

It's in early August, 2009. Great city to visit (I lived there for 3 years), and it is only a 2 hour drive for me. Fabulous restaurants abound, and the deli food is the best ever (try Schwartz's on St. Laurent). And you should be able to get by with English, as it is a bilingual city, but the signs are all in French.

Man, I live in Chicago. Wish I'd been paying attention last year!

WorldCon has been running since 1939 in New York City.

It's a wonderful institution and I was at last year's Con in Yokohmama, Japan. I had hoped to go to Worldcon 2009 but the costs may conspire against me. Besides, in 2010 it's being held in Melbourne, Australia where I live!

During WorldCon you have the Hugo awards (which if you register for WorldCon early enough you can vote for. There's a bit of work involved reading the various entries but it's a rewarding experience!) and the Masquerade ball (where contestants get dressed up and can win prizes) as 2 of the major highlights. Then there's usually some speicifc events central to the location you are visiting. In addition to that there's the Dealers Room, where you can purchase SFF books and other cool stuff including collector's items.

Then the Con itself has the standard press conferences, author retrospecitves, parties including "bid parties" where the competing countries (for 2 years hence) woo registred fans to vote for them at the Con, various discussion groups on specific SFF themes, demonstrations and panel discussions often on actual Science issues.

You also get a nice souvenir book to remind you of your stay at the Con and normally you can arrange for day passes or for a pass to the entire event.

Worldcons are also a great way to meet and make friends with fellow fans and to catch up with online buddys like the ones here at Chrons.

You never have enough time to attend everything at Cons so the trick is to see if you can arrange with a friend to split up so as to cover your favoured events between the two of you.

The event itself usually lasts about 5 days around August of each year and attracts thousands of visitors and locals, which is why a city has to bid to host the event.

I hope this gives you a better idea of what to expect and anyone wishing to attend WorldCon 2010 in the world's most liveable city, come on down!!...:)

That's actually kind of confusing, Gollum. Last year's World Con (2007) was in Yokohama, but the last Worldcon was in Denver.

UM..that's why I said last year's WorldCon as in 2007 as opposed to this year's Con 2008 in Denver....

Have you been to many WorldCons before? It's worth a visit...:)

I may go since Montreal is only a two-hour drive or train ride from Ottawa.

For anyone who has never been, it's an awesome city. Very cosmopolitan.

Hey, TK, 2 hours for me too. I live in Brockville, down on the 401, and my step kids live in Montreal.

I've never been to a WorldCon, so I am definitely making plans...

Cool. We'll have to see when we can meet GRRM. Perhaps joing a Brotherhood without Banners chapter might help us there.

I was lucky enough to meet him at Worldcon in Glasgow, 2005, and he's a really nice guy -- very approachable, not even losing patience when I asked him about the then long-overdue Feast of Crows (a question he must have heard hundreds of times before).

We're very fortunate in just how approachable and friendly genre authors tend to be. I can't think of any other literary form where fans can so easily meet and have a drink with the authors they've read for years.

Did anyone actually get to Montreal? I've got my dual language invite, but financially it was unthinkable, unfortunately.

But we haven't had any reports, or commentaries.

Yes I was wondering about that.

Any posts on WorldCon 2009 would definitely be welcome!

And now it's on to Melbourne next year. Sigh...the pressure is too much I tell ye!..

Not the best Worldcon I have been to by a long chalk, dealers room was small in comparison lack of US dealers, some interesting panels, poor organisation of the allocation of tickets for the N.Gaiman signings, excellent fan suite, good bid parties. Would not go back to Montreal for a visit not very nice people if you don't speak french and I do very little as they try to be more french than the French themselves. Roll on Reno in 2011.:)

OH...that's sounds like a downer. LOL!

Confident we'll put on a friendly welcome at least in 2010.... :)
