I can remember reading this book sometime prior to 1986.
This book describes a human dominated interstellar empire. One of the ways humans maintain their dominance is to have a team of "olympian" athletes that compete against aliens in the alien's own sports and under the alien's conditions of temperature, gravity, atmosphere, etc. Eventually, the aliens band together and wipe out humanity to the last man and woman. The book book begins and ends on the same note, some slime in a pond that would eventually be Man.
Any help would be much appreciated, I have tried to recall this title for years and have never succeeded.
