I thought they'd been chucked out years ago, but I've just discovered in my parents' attic a big box of Look and Learn magazines from the late seventies, including (IIRC) the entire run of Trigan Empire stories drawn by Oliver Frey. As a kid, he was my favourite of the artists, though I appreciate most fans go for the Butterworth/Lawrence ones (which were before my time, though the magaznine did reprint a few).

Anyone else remember the Oliver Frey strips? Any favourite stories you remember? I'm looking forward to going through them, though with a slight trepidation that they won't be as good as they once seemed.

I liked the Trigan Empire but it got a bit samey after a while. Succession of plots to depose Trigo. He lost his throne so many times he didn't deserve to have it back!

The SF series in Look & Learn I liked was Rip Solar.

What period was that? I don't remember any plots to depose Trigo in the Oliver Frey period - he made it much more futuristic. The best one was when something wakes up a cryogenically suspended megalomaniac from ancient times - and his scaly sabre-toothed panther pet.
