I read this during the 1970's, and even saw the movie version. It's about a young man from the Polynesian or Fiji islands. Somehow, he has to go out and earn his manhood ritual, which includes getting some shark's teeth which he would make into a necklace. He goes on a canoe with his dog, gets lost, and gets stranded on an island. The story is about him surviving on that island, which includes getting the necklace.
In the final part, there are cannibals in that region, and they land on that island. He has to evade them, get through the forest in that island, get onto the boat with his dog, and out paddle them. He can do it because his canoe doesn't sink as deep into the water, and, because they are going through the shallow coral reef area, he gets away while the cannibals' ships get caught.
He then arrives at his home, where his tribe greets him. His parents now see a young man, with his necklace and his dog, and they realize that he is no longer a child; he is a young man.
I would really like to know the title to this novel, and, if anyone can lead me to it, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much.
