Gondwane - Lin Carter

The last several months, I've been digging through and rereading some of my old SF books.

One of the collections I reread was Lin Carter's Gondwane series. I then followed up by searching online to make sure I had the whole series. I have the first 5 books listed below.

* The Warrior of World's End (1974)
* The Enchantress of World's End (1975)
* The Immortal of World's End (1976)
* The Barbarian of World's End (1977)
* The Pirate of World's End (1978)

But I have come across some references to this book (Giant of World's End (1969)) but almost no other information about it nor any samples of what is in it.

It sort of sounds like it should be part of the series but seems to have been published 5 years prior to what seems to be the first book of the series (Warrior of World's End).

Does anyone here know anything about this book?

OK, took me about 30 seconds to confirm that this book (1969) is indeed book 1 in a six book series Warrior's End.

Not bad for an old fella eh?....

Hmmm. Can you explain how you arrived at that conclusion?

Ganelon Silvermane himself (the hero and centerpiece of 5 books) only arrives on the scene supposedly out of the time capsule (newly born with an adult mind but a child's brain) in The Warrior of World's End.

If Giant at World's End was first, then it would have to be prequel I would think.

But the site fantasticfiction dot co dot uk (I can't post URL's yet) DOES list it as the first book.

Oh well. I was hoping someone here had read the series and maybe had the book. Guess I'll have to find a used copy to satisfy my curiously.

Yah, I haven't read the series, just sourced that information from the web. Could well be a prequel, if I can get any further information I'll post it here.

Not sure where you are based but plenty of cheap copies for a few dollars around....

The 1st edition was published by Belmont Books, New York in February 1969 at the cost of 50 cents.
Can't find out from the book who did the cover as the artist is not listed anywhere
Although on the Daw edition it states on the November 1974 cover Warrior is the 1st book.

Check of the explanation for the Daw book editions to be found in the St.James guide to Fantasy writers.

Yes, I have all the DAW books. Perhaps Giant of World's End and The Warrior of World's End are the same book but retitled in the DAW edition due to some sort of contractual problem? That would make sense.

According to the reference books Giant was a one of, then later on he decidcided to write more but DAW stopped them after Pirate (as there ten planned) Giant of World's End was after all 1st printed but the last one as it was written in the future,making the rest pre-equals.

Well, I finally got my hands on a copy of Giant Of World's End.

It does look like Giant Of World's End was originally meant to be a single, stand-alone book, because the problem the hero, Ganelon Silvermane, was created to address (stop the moon from falling) is fixed.

In book #1 (The Warrior Of World's End) the dedication is "For John Boardman who wanted some more". So looks like this John Boardman encouraged Line Carter to expand on the series.

In book #5 of the DAW series (The Pirate At World's End), it is mentioned that there was supposed to be 10 books all together.

I'm disappointed that Carter wasn't allowed to finish the series by DAW books.

In The Giant Of World's End, Ganelon Silvermane says (on page 23) "I came out of Ardelix Valut seventy years ago."

Book #1 of the DAW series starts just as he has come out of the time vault.
