can anyone help, i remember reading a couple of books around about 30 years ago and would like to re-read them but i can only remember the plots and not the titles, authors or publishers.

i've been hunting book shops for these 2 books for years now with no luck, one bookshop owner suggested posting what i remember in the hope that someone out there has a better memory than me.

so here goes.

the first was about colonisation of a distant planet through a gateway(similar i suppose to a stargate), the leader of the group who is last through, is warned to watch out for some animal by name then the gate closes without warning and the group are stranded for several years with no contact with earth. all i can remember apart from that, is that its the only book i've ever read cover to cover in one sitting.

the second is even more vague, a spaceship traveling through space by a series of hyperspace jumps hits a problem on the final jump and arrives at its destination a hundred years in the future, then i seem to remember they try getting back and it happens again.

any help or suggestions about other resourses to try would be greatly appreciated

This should probably be under "Book Search" - anyways

Unfortunately these don't toot any memory horns, but if you put stargate and animals in the same sentence it blares Andre Norton. Just an idea. :)

The first one does sound like Tunnel in the Sky by Robert A. Heinlein.

A Malthusian catastrophe on Earth has been averted only by the invention of teleportation, called the "Ramsbotham jump," which is used to send Earth's excess population to colonize other planets. However, the costs of operating the device mean that the colonies are isolated from Earth until they can build up a sufficient trade surplus to pay for two-way travel. Because modern technology requires specialized resources that are impractical to bring into the new planet, more primitive 'frontier' settling methods are used — horses and knives instead of tractors and rifles.

Rod Walker is a teenage high school student with dreams of becoming a professional colonist. The final test of his Advanced Survival class is to stay alive on an unfamiliar alien planet for between two and ten days. Students may team up and equip themselves with whatever gear they can carry, but are otherwise completely on their own. They are told only that the challenges are neither insurmountable nor unreasonable. On test day, he and the other students walk through the Ramsbotham portal and find themselves alone at separate locations on an alien planet. The last advice the students receive is to "Watch out for stobor."

Ring a bell, jimb0693?
