TV series shooting location and dates confirmed.

Nice find! I'm glad they have a date, I just wish it could be sooner :p Surely if they've set aside a date for filming then they must be coming along reasonably well with the casting surely? The actors need to be free for that date if they are still looking. :)

My understanding is that casting is underway but nothing will be revealed until they have 'locked' those actors in place.

Thanks, Wert.

Ireland... Much better than southern California. If you've never been to SoCal and you're wondering what it looks like outside of LA and San Diego, then watch an episode of MASH or that scene in Austin Powers II where Austin confronts Mustafa and you'll know exactly what SoCal looks like.

Filming on location is important, but for a fantasy story do you think it's more or less important to try and film on location? Some fantasy/epic medieval movies have done well in choosing filming locations, eg. The Lord of the Rings, Dragonslayer, The 13th Warrior, The Princess Bride. Some have done alright in choosing locations, eg. Excalibur, Ladyhawke. Some locations have not been good at all, eg. Krull, Hawk the Slayer, The Barbarians.

The advancement of incoporating CG seamlessly into scenery has allowed Tolkien's, Lewis', and Rowling's magnum opuses (sheesh, I hope that's a word) to come to the big screen. I did not see HBO's Rome, but I assume the CG effects were excellent.

Never having traveled to Ireland, I'll have to rely on pictures and movies for references... is it all green fields and green hills? Is there any other variation in topograpical features of Ireland? Because I think that the North, Winterfell, and even King's Landing could be represented by Ireland. But I don't envision HBO being able to produce the Dothraki Sea and Vaes Dothrak in Ireland... I assume they'll be going somewhere else to film Dany's scenes.

PS - Thanks Ursa... I was, err, editing my post.

Apparently, since we don't see Dorne until Season 4 it's not an issue to start with. If the show is a big enough hit to get to four seasons, it's likely something could be done to get the authentic flavour for Dorne (filming some scenes in Spain has apparently not been ruled out). I imagine the Dothraki sea and Vaes Dothrak will use large grassy fields with CGIed backdrops.

Just seeing the cast will be fun. The rest, cross your fingers!

Ireland is a great choice. I surely hope there's no famous actors doing this, however. It would kill me to see Danny devito as Robert or Ben Affleck as Renling. (Even though his implied gayness would crack me up)

From another board:

I was at a function tonight and got a chance to talk to the President of HBO Programming for a bit. I expressed my delight at them ordering a pilot, and we chatted for a bit.

He confirmed the Ireland filming location for later this year, and he said that the script Benioff wrote is absolutely amazing. He also said that it's important for them to really focus on the characters and make sure their performance comes out because he said he doesn't look at A Game of Thrones as a special effects event but rather as a really intense character story. He mentioned that after the script was passed around, everyone at the office went and picked up the books and they're all hooked, so that bodes well. He said it's a super expensive pilot, and it's risky in the sense that if it doesn't get made in the right way, it won't be as good as potential allows it to be.

I saw that (on Winter Is Coming - News and rumors about HBO's Game of Thrones).

We can only hope that "everyone at the office" doesn't start obsessing about the publication date of the next book rather than getting on with getting as much of ASoIaF on our screens. ;):)

(There's quite a bit of scepticism in the comments on the story on the Winter is Coming site.)

True, however that is the forum that the guy who runs WiC was a member of prior to starting the blog, so if he rates the reliability of that poster, it's reasonably good for me. He's been pretty reliable so far.

This is a sentence I didn't think I would ever write in my entire life, but:

Martin McGuinness has successfully lobbied HBO to have A Game of Thrones filmed in Northern Ireland.

The BBC also have a report on the situation here.

The pilot will enter production in the third quarter of 2009 (it's in pre-production and casting right now) and start filming around October. A 'massive set' will be built at the Paint Hall studio in Belfast, presumably for Winterfell. In addition to shooting in Northern Ireland, I am also hearing there will be additional location shoots in Scotland and Morocco.

Not to be a drudge but I think the proper phrase would be magnum opi if I remember my latin correctly.

Im completely trying to stay away from the series until things get announced. I dont want to know the "potential" cast, I can wait til theyre signed. I just dont want to be disappointed.

But this...Northern Ireland will do quite nicely for a the north...its a rocky hilly green open sorta place. Its perfect.

Im all giddy.

First of all, never contradict me. Never. If you do this, then I'll feel bad about myself. I might start to cry. Do you really want this on your conscience?

Second, it appears that based on the Latin plural opera magna... our English plural would be magna opera. Dictionary.com gives the acceptable plurals for opus as opuses and opera.

Finally, GRRM posted regarding filming in Belfast in his latest Not A Blog entry. Looks like he's going over and to watch some of the filming.
