Hi,
Looking for a book from 60's, 70's or possibly early 80's..
Basic outline:
Humans forced to leave earth after latest 'wonder material' (stronger than steel, pours like concrete) begins to fail after 3 decades of heavy use (where it has replaced most other types of buiding material).
Family that owns the build material company assist mass exodus (but only a couple hundred thousand people) to asteriod belt.
There they hollow out asteriods.
Division ensues, some want to stay in solar system, others leave to find new planets to colonise.
Further division ensues, of those who leave Sol some settle planets, others choose to stay in asteriods.
Story follows several generations, with some large time-scale interludes.
I think span was maybe a millions years.
Starfarers evolve (become [small planet sized] entities, are called to rendevous in Sol system, to find others (aliens) have arrived.
