Okay.. somebody's probably asked this before, but I already did a search and didn't find the exact same question put forward.

My question is; why isn't there an author thread/section specifically for CJ Cherryh? I think she more than deserves it (and I could argue she deserves it more than some of the other authors who already have their own sections).

Sorry if there's a technical reason for this, but it's a question I've been meaning to ask for a long time.. :)

There are a number of threads on Cherryh on this site, but t takes five of them, and some of them have to show a fair degree of recent activity, before a sub-forum is created. Unfortunately, there was never that level of interest in her writing, and we never reached that point.

Sub-forums are not created because the authors "deserve" them, they are a way of organizing existing threads.

Does Cherryh deserve more discussion on this board? I certainly think so, but although there have been times when there have been little flurries of interest it always dies out pretty quickly.

If you want to resurrect some of the old threads and start the conversations going again and see if there is more sustained interest this time around, I know there are at least a few of us who will be glad to jump in.

Never read any Cherryh. But while were at it could we celebrate Brian Aldiss too? Am really surprised there's no seperate thread for him!

I assume you mean no separate forum for Aldiss, since there are indeed threads, as you already know, since you started some of them.

All I can say to anyone who wants to see a particular author's sub-forum created is to start a conversation, the kind that generates a real discussion of that author's work, and see where it goes. If it doesn't go anywhere, then that's your answer.

It's disappointing when you try to stir up interest in a favorite author's books and nothing much comes of it, but it happens pretty often. There are usually more people who agree that a forum should exist than there are people who would actually participate if it did.

That's the sad truth of the matter. There are many, many writers "deserving" of such a subforum, were it based on merit: Bradbury is another recent mention in that connection; Edgar Rice Burroughs is another; I'd certainly like to see sections devoted to Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison, Joanna Russ, and James Tiptree, Jr., among others. But... the only way to get such is for there to be enough people interested in keeping enough conversations going, keeping them lively, for a period long enough to make it worthwhile to organize all such into a specific area devoted to that writer. And, as Teresa notes, that -- like the recurrent efforts to get a Book Club going -- just doesn't seem to work out....

Thanks for the clarification, Teresa. I thought it was something like that. And come to think of it, jdw's quite right, too; there are a lot of other writers who 'deserve' a section, I guess.

One other question: do author sections ever get terminated once activity dies down? I've seen sections where there hasn't been any new posts for a long time..

Good question. Of course, whenever someone says "good question", it usually means they don't know the answer...........certainly true for me.

I know for a fact that doesnt happen. Tim Powers forum is a good example. There werent any activity for long time and its still its there and there have been more talks this year.

Generally there won't be a move to remove or move an existing author subforum based on lack of activity.

For clarification on this point you would probably have to ask our esteemed leader I Brian or one of the other mods.

As Conn suggests, I don't think I recall seeing an author subforum ever being moved or replaced as you do often get new members joining who then reignite interest in a specific author.

Janny Wurts I think?.. is the most recent addition we have and that came after a pretty sutained groundswell of interest from several members if memory still servers...

Cheers....

Thats because Janny Wurts rocks ! The sub forum was pretty much what first attracted me to join this forum ! Hence the name :D
Long live Grimward, clansmen and all the other worthy people who contribute to that forum !

See what I mean....Then again with a username like Althain's Warden is there any wonder?...

It's true though, Janny is an excellent prose stylist and she's another author of whom I own and have read all published works.
