The first David Gemmell Legend Award shortlist has been announced. The nominations are:

Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie
Heir to Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier
The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski
The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks

Disappointing not to see Paul Kearney's The Ten Thousand on there, as it was both the best book of 2008 (although there wasn't much between it and Last Argument) and the most 'Gemmell-like' book on the list by miles. Also surprised not to see Peter Brett's The Painted Man, as he'd picked up a lot of praise and momentum along the way. My shortlist vote will definitely be going to Abercrombie, although it's nice to see both Sapkowski and Sanderson also nominated.

The Awards will be held in London on 19 June and I will be attending. There may be pictures.

Good to see Last Argument of Kings make the list. Best damn fantasy I've read in a long time...

Sapkowski is a quality writer im glad to see him there. Him being polish i thought would make it harder for him among the other popular fantasy writers that made the final list.

I have read only him and Sanderson of those writers so its choice for me. Sanderson isnt near Sapkowski to me.

My vote is for Abercrombie but I would have chosen Kearney if he had been listed.

Conn: You not yet read Abercrombie?....I'm amazed young Sir....:)

Well i let my taste, mood for books lead to who i read. I dont read authors because they are the newest hype.

What kind of fantasy is Abercrombie ? A Kearney type/Sanderson epic heroic fantasy ? If not i have no interest in the other kind ei GRRM kind . My taste in fantasy dont run that way.

Normally i wouldnt wonder about Abercrombie since he is listed for Gemmell Legend award after all but i read before that they opened for all traditional fantasy.

UMMM....more Kearney/Sanderson than GRRM I would say. Certainly of an EPIC nature but heaps of action which I like.

Very good debut series that he wrote.

Maybe wait until a few other members have their say on this one.

Must go to sleep, so cheers and see you friend....:)

of the 5, i've read Weeks and Abercrombie - the latter was far more to my tastes, but I'll definitely go back and investigate the others.
