Hi all,
When I was young I remember reading a strange book. It would never have been bought by my parents and was probably "acquired", possibly from my uncle or parhaps at a jumble sale. It had one of those old generic fantasy covers.
It was probably a bit old for me and, despite not particularly enjoying the story, I was fascinated by it's strangeness. From my indistinct memories: the story was about a green-eyed boy who also was connected to 2 other reincarnations, one a man who may have been may have been called sourney, and another god/hero who lives in a future place called the drowned land which is at war. The boy aspect, due to his green eyes and a lack of respect for his elders is punished, and finally outcast, by priests who become fearful of his transformation into a fusion of the three aspects. At this point he is banished to sea by the frightened priests. I think that the story may flit between the 2 reincarnations.
The pages were interspersed with weird heiroglphys and an image of the "drowned god" that, to me, seemed to have an eyptian theme. There were other mythical references to old gods and it also contained some poetry the very last poem is concerned with the banished boy, despite being bound and about to be killed taunting his captors. Part of it may be something like :-
Will the fisherman lauch the lion on the ocean deep and wide?
Is the stream holy water ?
Is is it to cool their brow
Or is it poison to ...
He then tells them that they'll never know the answer to this riddle, and it will haunt them.
If it sounds familiar, I would be interested to find out what this odd book may have been. Apologies if it's someone's favourite and I mangled the description above - I was quite young and my memory of it is pretty vague. ;-)
Thanks in advance.
Greg
