I read the Weavers of Saramyr, first volume of the Braided Path by Chris Wooding, and it left me cold. So I don't want to read the others, but I was intrigued by his concept of the Weave. I know this is cheating, but I'd like to know if he does much with it in the other two books. Does he use it to say anything interesting about the nature of reality, or it is merely a device to allow the Weavers to communicate telepathically and exercise long-range mind control?

Also, what is the Weavers' big objective? Is it some kind of warped spiritual aspiration?

Thanks for any help.

Here's your answers, although I would also say that a couple of friends recently nearly gave up on the series after Book 1 but kept going and found the second and third books to be much stronger, if that's any help.

The Weave is revealed to be a sort of alternate dimension, not dissimilar to the Warrens in the Malazan series. Strange but apparently benign beings live in the Weave and appear to have 'noticed' humanity by the end of the series, indicating the beginning of a new age of discovery and progress.

The Weavers' plan is to empower the stones that have been excavated across the planet. It is revealed that aeons ago a dark god was imprisoned in a fourth moon that used to orbit the planet, but the moon was destroyed and its fragments - the stones - were scattered across the world. Once all the stones are excavated and their power combined, this dark god will live again. The Weavers are subconsciously following his design. Needless to be said, the good guys win, the stones are destroyed once and for all and the Weavers are defeated.
