Not sure about the title, but my best guess is "The Fire's Gift."
The plot as I recall it centers around a young woman who can talk to trees, living in a world where magic users are mostly feared and shunned, except for the wizard that serves the king. She runs away from her father's lands and... somehow ends up where the king's wizard is battling some bad guy (?) in order to get this magical chalice. I think at this point he gets attacked by fire and she uses her own magic to take his pain away so he can still fight-- this links them together, though neither of them realize it yet.
When she's healed from the battle, she's sent back to her father's home and basically treated like a pariah. At least, up until the point where the family moves to the capitol city to go to court (possibly because the country is mobilizing for war?). She makes friends with a little girl with a large purple birthmark on her face, who turns out to be the king's youngest daughter. She also leaves her family to live in the wizard's tower, because he noticed her growing power and offered to train her. Also, she can't hear the trees as well as she used to, and he can hear them more.
Um. The king and all his family is killed somehow by the country they're at war with-- except for the little girl, who chooses our wizardess main character as her main advisor. I'm even fuzzier on the details after this point... Er. There's a battle of magic, probably with the bad guy the wizard was fighting with over the chalice. The chalice is used to defeat him, but the wizard dies. The wizardess becomes the new royal wizard...
I swear, this is much less of a teen drama than it sounds. It was very intense, and very... adult, for a lack of a better word :/
If anyone could possibly help me, they would have my eternal gratitude! i'm looking for title confirmation and an author!
