I've found a few authors around like Dave Duncan and was wondering if anyone could list a few others. Gemmel had a certain 'flair' that is hard to find....

I haven't read much heroic fantasy except for Gemmell but try Brent Weeks, he has hero's who are flawed and you think to yourself how did this guy become so hated and why do I still like him as a character. I think he wrote only one series so far coz he is new on the scene. Look for the Night Angel trilogy starting with The Way of the Shadows. Very good, lots of action when it picks up and lots of character development like in Gemmells books.

Paul Kearney is similar in heroic fantasy.

For must reads authors of the days before Gemmell is Robert.E Howard.

Both Brent Weeks and Paul Kearney are very close in pacing and style to Gemmell.

I don't think anyone writes like him, but if you like him, you would probably like Raymond Feist, Jim Butcher's fantasy books, and Gail Z. Martin's books... Just a thought. :)

I think the real answer here is "no one" but like everyone else I can suggest maybe some similar reads.... Try Glen Cooks Black Company. Or for a story more from the sight of the light maybe Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion (not however her space operas..aimed at a different audience).

I wholeheartedly reccomend Brian Ruckley, his three books of the Godless World are great. First one starts slow and there are alot of charachters to get to know. Not as much swordplay as Gemmell's books but great epic story.

The charismatic warrior, tortured by internal conflict, severe past dissappointment/suffering, self-doubts, a fear/hate of failure, worried about not meeting everybody's expectations of his own heroism, etc. etc.

That's David's hero, right? You can see it in all the main characters of the Troy series. From Achilles, to Hector, to Aeneas, to Argurios, to Kalliades. Even joker/talespinner Odysseus.

The ambience always dark and brutal. Oh yeah. DG rules.
