So for children, what comes after the Harry Potter books? My children are 10 (girl) and 7 (boy) and have read Enid Blighton's Faraway Tree books and are now comming to the end of the Harry Potter series. What would people recommend next?

If your daughter is a mature 10 year old, she might like to give the Tamora Pierce books a try. I would usually wait to recommend them until 11 or 12, but I read them when I was 10 and I don't think anything bad happened because of it.

Perhaps Animorphs? Deltora Quest? Some of Enid Blyton's other books?

They're the ones I can remember from that age.

series:

Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo
The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
The Warriors by Erin Hunter
The Dragon Orb by Mark Robson
The Mistmantle Chronicles by MI Mcallister
City of Ember series by Jeanne Deprau

Stand alones:

The Princess Bride by william Goldman
Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C o'Brien
A View from Saturday and From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler by EL Konigsburg
The Falconer's Knot by Mary Hoffman
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

I could really go on all day as my youngest is 10 and we go through books, the lot of us. I've read all of the stand-alones, and bits of the series and can vouch that they are all good.

Try Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events...

Or the Narnia books, by C.S. Lewis.

Listing this one because it's not mentioned above or in the linked thread, but is a must read for kids (especially fun reading to them!), at least in my humble opinion:D:

The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster

The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy
Spiderwick series by Tony DiTerlizzi.
R.L Stines Goosebumps books
Inkheart series by Corneila Funke.
Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balilett
A Wrinkle in time by Madeleine L'Engle
Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz
T*Witches by H.B Gilmour and Randy
Among the hidden by Margarte peterson haddix reisfeld

None of those have overly mature content if they've read Harry Potter.

From Jane Yolen: The Pit Dragon Trilogy 1) Dragon's Blood 2) Heart's Blood 3) a Sending of Dragons.

More sf than fantasy: John Christopher's Tripods series (prequel) When the Tripods Came--written last and I mho should be read after the original trilogy. The trilogy itself is 1) The White Mountains 2) The city of Gold and Lead 3) The Pool of Fire.

I read them all and still do as an adult. Bother series very well written.

The Icefire series by Chris D'Lacey are suitable for both. Although the books are all quite long for your lad, the story is suitable for his age (my daughter read them at age 8 and loved them) and will not lead to nightmares. Also, Dragonrider by Cornelia Funke for the younger one (again long, but brilliantly suitable) and I will add my own humble recommend of the Dragon Orb series to that of Bookstop for your 10 year old. :)
