I hear this all the time in dance or acting - there're these masters who have their method of dancing or acting, and everyone wants to study under them. But I have never heard of anything like this in science fiction writing, though I know nothing of other genres. I mean, Isaac Asimov may be a master, but he never advocated a method or technique of writing, and people never beat a path to his door asking to study under him.
I can only think of one such aspect in writing, and, yes, Asimov did discuss this once. It's the difference between clear writing and flowery prose. Asimov said that clear writing was far superior, and he used the example of clear glass versus colored panes. Making clear glass was far more difficult than colored ones, and they were therefore evidence of master craftsmanship.
This aside, I don't know of any master with his special method of writing - unlike dance and acting masters who had theirs.
