In your opinion, which character has grown, matured, become more complex, etc. to the point where they have become invaluable to the plot, or just a great read when they are around. I'm having trouble deciding between Danny and Sansa :)

Ill say jaime. just because he has gone from flinging children out of a window to helping brienne and ignoring cersei. and also i like reading his chapters. but an honourable mention to Samwell. Im not a huge fan (excuse the pun) but he has gone from a soft kid with so little self confidence to acheiving great things (in his view and thats all that matters), like helping the wildling girl and also bedding her!

It was a really tough choice for me between Danny and Sansa. Both started as children, both have emerged as very strong characters that I think will both have a bearing on the final outcome of the plot. What clinched it for me was how much I disliked Sansa in GOT and how intrigued I am by her now. The scary thing is, she's not even done developing yet. I think the day may come where she surpasses the "master" and is able to win the GOT against Littlefinger. THAT would be sweet indeed.

Sansa for sure. for a lot of GoT i disliked her intensely - especially in regard to Arya and Nymeria... But... her chapters have become my absolute favourite. I don't know if i'd call her my favourite character (though she'd definitely now be up there... and WAY above Arya on my list) but she seems to have changed and learnt the most out of the characters. She was perhaps the most sheltered and unaware of the real world out of the characters... but oh how she is rising to that challenge now.

I went with Jaime. Getting inside of his head in his chapters is fascinating.

While I like Jaime, his "transformation" hinged on him losing his sowrd hand. Whaqt has always bothered me about that has been how similar this was to Roland losing the 3 fingers of his shooting hand in the beginning of The Drawing of the Three (Dark Tower 2, Steven King). It may sound silly but this diminishes him for me.

Went with Jaime. To date, he has improved the most as a character. We have yet to see the full potential of Sansa, Dany and Sam.

For now, I also went with Jaime. At the end of the series, I think my choice could well be Sansa, but so far for me Jaime has been the most improved. I went from not liking him in the beginning of the series, to now really enjoying his character.

Most Improved? Probably Robb. In life, he was too much of a walking cliche for my taste. He was a rich, powerful, noble, heroic, teenage king with a superwolf... If I've read one fantasy story like that, I've read a hundred. In death, he's much more interesting... he's a martyr... he cries out for justice... In death, Robb has become a cause... I'd love to see a cult arise from this... the Cult of the Young Wolf.

Or mayhaps Joffrey is the most improved. In life, he was annoying. His death pleased me greatly.

But seriously... if most improved means maturity, then I'd say in order they are Arya, Dany, Jon, Jaime, and Sansa.

If most improved means becoming a fascinating character, then I'd say Jaime and Tyrion.

If I was going with "fascinating' i'd go with Varys. I'm very interested in knowing what comes next. Or littlefinger for that matter.

Fascinating major character? Probably Dany

I think Jaime has improved a heck of a lot. He used to just seem like a villain or child killer now he's like a reformed man trying to make a difference. Almost a "true knight" but well aware that ideals like that are so rare they're laughable. He's smart and sarcastic and that makes for some really interesting reads. He was one of the few characters that pulled me into AFFC, at first I was disappointed that almost none of my favorite characters were going to be in this book but Jaime helped keep me in the book until I could not put it down.

On a side note, my favorite character is Arya Stark.

Jaime, seems to me like he's turned around the most.

If Sansa gets going than it might be her.

Dany is impressive too.

Jon.

He held The Wall against the Wildings while being a half crippled teenager.

He killed the Halfhand on order, has protected Mormont, bantered well with Stannis, made the decision to send Sam off with Mance's baby, and has become the head of the Nights Watch in place of the Old Bear. He was handpicked by Noye, and told Slynt that he, "doesn't know what your head is full of."

He has become a youthfull embodiment of: Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

I won't argue with the picks of Danny or Jaime, but for me it's Jon.

Sure, pull out the "Night gathers" card. I still can't read that without getting a chill down my spine.

You make a good argument for Jon. I guess one of the main reasons I went with Sansa was becuase I never expected much from her, let alone a hcaracter that may become a very powerful player down the road. I somehow always expected Jon to become a strong character.

Jon is half Stark at best, however the cards end up falling.

But he has embraced the ideals of that name, quickly, under duress, and better than anyone else in their house has since Eddard.

He has gone from a ******* son to The Lord Commander in a couple of years, while earning the respect of all that know him well.

He has proved himself, not only loyal, but also strong, even in the face of death.

He has proved himself brave in combat, and worthy, not only of his wolf, but also of the sword he carries on his back.

He has ran with Wildings, he carries Valaryian steel, argued with kings, fought wights, lived through his family's destruction, and is starting to become a warg.

And he has, throughout, stayed a man of the Night's Watch.

While just being a teenager.

Winter is coming.
