I won't go into lengthy details, but a few years ago I bought a copy of the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook mostly to help me compile a list of possible agents/publishers.

I had to do some major work on my book, and am just beginning the process of sending it off again (writing that damned synopsis, cover letters etc) and I was wondering if it'd be worth buying (and waiting for) the latest edition which is released at the end of June.

It's updated every year but I don't know if there'd be enough change to warrant the purchase and the time waiting (although I will be using that time for writing the synopsis and that sort of thing so it wouldn't be entirely wasted).

I woud make your list from the volume you have, then cross-check the agent details with searches on the web. Also triple check with sites like Absolutewrite and Preditors and Editors.

As even between the new volume going to print and being published things can change, especially in the current climate. A lot of agents seem to have shut for submissions.

Thanks for the tips. I was going to check details online anyway but didn't know about those sites you mentioned. Cheers :)

I'm still using my 2005 edition and it's fine. Some things do change, but a quick look at the websites (they all have them now!) pretty much confirms whether they still take submissions or not...

I am going through the "find genre agents in the UK" exercise right now. It's a bitty exercise finding agencies, and individual agents that accept SFF (in my case epic horror). I've dug a few up via website, writers and artists, authors pages, the Chrons, John Jarrold etc. Then it's on to synopsis, cover letters... and the "oh my god is it really ready."

Does anybody know of a comprehensive up to date list. I know Brian kindly put a list that I've seen, (I'll have another look for it and link it here, it was very helpful).

Here's Brian's thread on UK literary agents from 2006:
