Alien 5 - plot, cast, director?

I have high hopes for Prometheus, with Ridley Scott in charge. He is a great director, an awesome focus on light and lighting even in something like 'Thelma and Louise' where you might not think there was much room for that. He is like a painter in that respect.

He also takes care of his stories and his characters, and I haven't seen him do a movie just because it is a surefire hit or will make money- he makes what he cares about.

So with him at the helm, I am very optimistic that we will have the great addition to the canon that we haven't seen since the first two movies.

BTW much as I love Aliens, I did feel a sense of loss that the terrifying and seemingly near-invincible creature from the first became almost dispoable cannon-fodder in the second, mown down in the hundreds (well, in the tens I guess because there were only 150 or so colonists). The creature went from a terrifying demon in the dark, something truly foreign and alien, to a mere member in an overgrown insect colony in the second. I prefered demon to ant for my cinematic thrills and chills, though I do love the second for its action and comedy, and the cool vehicles and weapons (nw seen in 3D in Avatar, a kind of reversed Aliens plotwise where the aliens are the good guys, and the exoskeleton at the end is the bad guy.)

You have to think of the first film as a "haunted house" tale. The second was more along the lines of a thrill ride. Both great in their own way. Unfortunately, the next two were both poor.

I agree that we should trust Ridley Scott to do a good job with the next.

Tom, why not introduce yourself in the "general", "introductions" section.

Well put. This is exactly why I (and yourself) are among the few that think 1 was better than 2.

BTW, the summary posted above by bedlamite is awe-inspiring.

Though the chances are slim since the franchise was raped by FOX and its AVP series, what would eveyrones ideal alien 5 be?

It would be directed by Ridley Scott, and it would explore the mythos behind the Alien instead, and would not centre on the big scary monster itself, but would explore in larger detail a different concept and aspect of the universe.

Oh, and it would be called "Prometheus".

I really have high hopes for this. I've always loved the first two films, although in fact I read the novel of the first film first (and over and over again as a kid).

I disagree that the 3rd film was awful though. Aside from a fair bit of confusion about what the plan actually is to trap the alien at the end (really slow moving piston? lead mold? what?) it's a fair film and fits the style of the first two well. The 4th one is just awful though - far too much comedy and just not the same tone as the others at all. And then they basically turned it into a teen slasher film with the last AvP. Ugh.

The best thing about the first film was the sense of isloation and the sheer alien-ness. The "space jockey" is almost the best part of it in that sense as it's so alien. I kind of hope they don't spoil the mystery too much with this new film. Even Aliens, great though it is, took a lot of the mystery out of the first film and basically turned this enigmatic race into a bunch of ants.

I agree with you for the most part on your viewpoints of these films. While you did not mention the first AvP, (which I rather enjoyed) I have to say I really wanted to hate the 3rd Alien movie because they destroy everything they worked so hard for in the 2nd film. They cast it all aside during the opening credits like they didn't even care. On its own, I like the film, I like the feel of it very much. As for the 4th, if memory serves, it did fair justice in my mind for the 3rd films mistakes. Although my memory of these two films might be distorted by the years since I have seen them. Looking forward to the new one, though.

I'm glad it's not just me that thinks this. Alien is one of those films where the film industry should have said, when Aliens was considered, "Enough!"

That's one of the reasons I like it though I think. It's an incredibly bleak film, and pretty much no-one gets any sort of happy ending.

I really liked the 4th film when I saw it the first time, but it really is a dumbed down Hollywood-ised version, with the usual band of Hollywood-esque characters in it. Far too many silly and unbelievable moments (like shooting someone behind you by bouncing a bullet off two pipes in the ceiling for example). I really liked the game of the 4th film though :)

I don't really remember the first AvP film all that much. I saw it once and wasn't particularly impressed by it.
