The novel takes place in a world much like that of Card's Alvin Maker series, but the main character is a young woman. There are three instances mentioned in the story. The first deals with a werewolf attacking the settlement where she lives, and one of her brothers falls to the curse; the next deals with a vampire moving in, and as part of her training in being a witch, she has to destroy it; the last instance deals with her and her teacher, an aunt, going to an another town to deal with the ghost of and unwanted child. She has relatives who are witches.
