Renegade's Magic

It seems like I've been reading this for a very long time. Robin Hobb is one of my favourite writers and I love all her other books, even the other two Soldier Son books. But this one? I'm just struggling with!

I don't like Soldier's Boy, and Nevare's not much better just floating around doing nothing. The story doesn't seem to be going anywhere! All that seems to be going on is eating. That's it.

Please tell me it gets better!

I'm up to the bit where they've gone to Kinrove's camp and have just had the argument with Dasie.

This is a common annoyance amongst readers; that renegade's magic has an awful lot of writng and a very little of happening. To tell you it gets better would spoil it for you either way. My advice would be to finish the book so you can at least say you finished the series.

I had the same struggle...I am not sure of Hobb's motivation but if it was any other author I don't think I would have had as much patience for it as I did. Not her best work...I am glad she has returned to what she does best!

I found that bit boring, but simply because i loved Nevares spirit and strength in the previous two i managed to kind of enjoy the book while still hoping something big would happen, Personally i've always been under the impression that Hobb' doesn't like too link characters/places together in different series, the Liveship trilogy had a few links to the Assassins but you didn't really understand them until the end of the second/beginning of third book, the same applied for The Tawny Man trilogy however there was a lot more than in the liveship. I found the fact that she created a totally different "world" to base this story in it's biggest letdown, if she'd somehow adjusted the plot to a place readers were familar too it would of been a bigger triumph in my opinion.

I had just finished book 1 of the soldier son trilogy. It is boring in the first part, but exciting in the middle, and super exciting in the end. I like how Nevares kill the old tree woman who took him into captivity with her magic. I also like reading about the life and discrimination in the academy.

I liked the first book the best in the series. I really enjoyed the academy parts. Still an above average series but kudos to the first book

I'm hoping this last book will be better than the second one ( Forest Mage ). I really liked Shaman's Crossing, but Forrest Mage is draggy, and I'm having a hard time sympathizing with Navare. He just doesn't seem to have any common sense.

If you thought the Forest Mage was draggy, you don't know what you're in for with the Renegade's Magic.

I'm currently reading Renegade's Magic and though I find it really hard to say such a thing of Hobb's work, I' finding this one even worse than it's prequel.
I'd hoped that all of Nevare's weight issues would be over by the end of Forest Mage, the last thing I'd expected was to go through all of Forest Mage again.
I'm really disappointed so far.
I fear struggling through this book would like rereading Goodkind's Naked Empire all over again.....

Well, I agree with most everyone's comments. The soldier son trilogy didn't do it for me and was a disappointment, hence the fact it took me ages to read as I kept putting it down and reading something else. Yet with all 9 Fitz/Fool books I couldn't put them down and read them all in just a few weeks - kept being interrupted with things like work and sleep!

I'm still struggling through this one. Keep putting it down and reading other things (even put it down in favour of Ant and Dec's autobiography!!) and now I'm reading a Garth Nix book. I'm still determined to finish it! I'm over half way now.

Finally finished this!! Yay!!! It picked up massively towards the end. I'm glad there was a happy ending too, I was worried it was going to be depressing the whole way through.

Yeah so this has been the first trilogy I've ever read of Hobbs, and I've liked them quite alot, although they do seem to drag in parts. Shamans crossing has been the most enjoyable so far. I really want his father to realise nevare isn't actually a complete moron (although he is clearly a bit of one).

You should check out her other trilogies, as they're much better than the Soldier's Son books.
