Futurama characters are still popular at fan conventions
Animated comedy Futurama is to return to US TV screens with 26 new episodes - seven years after it was axed by Fox.
They will air in 2010 on cable network Comedy Central, which shows repeats and previously commissioned four specials.
Futurama tells the story of pizza delivery boy Philip Fry, who was cryogenically frozen at the end of 1999 before being defrosted in 2999.
Creators Matt Groening and David X Cohen said they were "excited and amazed" the show was returning.
'Passionate fans'
The show, which follows the space-age adventures of Fry, his love interest Turanga Leela, and Bender - a cigar smoking misanthropic robot - originally ran on Fox between 1999 and 2003.
The popularity of the repeats of the 72 original episodes - bought from Fox in 2006 - as well as strong DVD sales for the four feature-length specials have led to the resurrection.
Groening, who also created The Simpsons, said: "We're thrilled Futurama is coming back.
"We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000."
Comedy Central's David Bernath said there remained "a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience".
"It's fantastic that we can add brand new instalments of Leela, Fry and Bender's adventures to our existing library," he added.
In 2005, Fox resurrected another animated comedy, Family Guy, which it had cancelled in 2002.

Futurama is still fairly new to me and until recently it was just one of those shows like the Simpsons that you have on but don't really watch. But I've come to love it. Altho its created by the same guy that brought us the Simpsons its a lot more than just The Simpsons in space! I never knew the backstory till you just pointed it out tho. I love Bender,he's hilarious. Funny thing is there's a fair bit of adult humour in there but i imagine its usually just put on for the kids by most people. My 3 year old son enjoys it(he's showing early signs of being into sci fi already-loves Star Trek!) and I suddenly found myself getting into it too. Good stuff!

I'm glad it's making a come-back. I liked the feature length shows that have been made in its (TV) absense, but I thought they were a bit stretched. I think with the 20 minute shows they are tighter and funnier.

I'm in the UK. Yeah, I think it's about 3-4 hour long episodes were made (at about one every six months) since Futurama got cancelled.

I know you can buy them in the shops, but I put them all on my Lovefilm account and they send them to me. I think they're called - Bender: The Beast With a Billion Bucks, Bender's Big Score and Bender's Game. I've just looked on Play.com and seen another one 'Into the Wild Green Yonder' - but I don't think I've seen that oen yet.

Hmmm not heard of those. (I'm in the UK too but don't have full Sky,just a few Sky channels on Virgin 1)
We normally catch Futurama around about 5pm on Dave or Sky 1 I think.

Great News!!! I love Futurama, Bender rocks!!

Don't know the name of the feature length episodes, but two of them have been shown on SKY1 within the last few months. The one where Fry falls in love with the nymphomaniac then the creature from another universe and the one where those wierd aliens con everyone out of the planet by time travelling to get loads of cash etc (lots of gold death stars at the end).

That really is great news. I loved Futurama.

A Cancelled show making a reappearance? Nice. Now, what can we do to get B5 and Firefly back on the screen?

Didn't the try to do a Babylon 5 spin-off show called "Rangers" or something? I heard it sank pretty quickly, not that I ever got round to watching it.

For good reason. Legend of the Rangers was rubbish unfortunately and deserved to die a horrible death.

I really hope that this outing that Futurama is a hit.

Animated comedy Futurama could be voiced by new actors after the studio behind its comeback failed to reach an agreement with the original cast.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, talks have broken down after a pay dispute with actors including John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal and Billy West.
"We love the Futurama voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them," 20th TV said in a statement.
"But unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands."
The other original cast members are Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille.

Hopefully it's just a ruse to drum up awareness of the show before it's aired.

Boo, Futurama isn't Futurama without the same actors. Great show!
 
If they change the voices they should blatantly get actors who have completely different accents. I'd watch the show if Fry suddenly became Scouse!
 
I think they the original cast are all on board now. So the panic's over (I hate the idea of Catherine Tate sound alike voicing Lela. "Have i only got one eye? Am i bovverred.")
 
this show is getting worse than family guy with the amount of background problems, false starts and problems...

i enjoy futurama, but i think it's time to leave it alone before they ruin the product...
