Have you ever wondered why GRRM chose the arms he did for his home page? I mean with almost 500 houses to choose from, why did he pick the ones he did?

Well, the row at the top where the main links, we have the main houses in Westeros:

Dayne for "Life and Times" - an interesting choice
Starfall is a great castle on the shores of the Summer Sea, situated at the mouth of a river which spills out into a bay. One of the towers of the castle, which stands next to the water, is called the Palestone Sword. The Sword of the Morning is a title given to a Dayne knight who is considered worthy of wielding the greatsword Dawn. The current lord of the house is Edric Dayne, squire to Lord Beric Dondarrion after the Lord of Blackhaven espoused his aunt Lady Allyria. He is nephew to the deadliest knight of Aerys’s Kingsguard, Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, and his sisters, the beautiful Lady Ashara and Lady Allyria, by their elder brother. Ser Arthur died at the Tower of Joy, killed by Lord Eddard Stark and Lord Howland Reed. Lady Ashara had been a lady in waiting to Princess Elia of Dorne for a few years when she went back to Starfall for unknown reasons. Given Dawn and the news of her brother’s death by Lord Eddard, she threw herself into the Summer Sea from the Palestone Sword. Her body was never recovered.

Tully for "Bibliography"

Baratheon for "Not a Blog"

Targaryen for "Appearances"

Stark for "News"

Lannister for "Ice & Fire Update"

Greyjoy for "Ice & Fire Sample"

Arryn for "Wild Cards Sample"

Tyrell for "FAQ"

Martell for "Links"

But the bottom is intriguing. Here are his choices:

Qorgyle for "For Collectors"
The Qorgyle's are from Sandstone. Sandstone sits in the west of Dorne amidst the desert east of the mountains. The only members of the house to appear or be mentioned are Lord Commander Qorgyle, who commanded the Night’s Watch before Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, and Ser Arron Qorgyle.

Fell for "Cover Art"
The Fell's are from Felwood. Members of the house that have been mentioned are a dead Lord Fell and his son who was known as Silveraxe. Lord Fell, along with Lords Grandison and Cafferen, planned to remain loyal to King Aerys and were going to join forces to attack Lord Robert. Robert, catching wind of it, raced to the designated place of Summerhall and defeated each army in turn as it came up. Robert killed Lord Fell in single combat and captured Silveraxe. Afterwards, Silveraxe became Robert’s man and fought for him during the war. The present ruler of the house is Lord Harwood Fell.

Connington for "From my Readers"
The Connington's are from Griffon's Roost. The only members of the house to appear or be mentioned are the fierce head of the house Ronnet Connington (called Red Ronnet for his red beard), the Knight of Griffin’s Roost, and the dead Lord Jon Connington. Young Lord Connington was one of Rhaegar’s close companions, and was a noted warrior in his own right. After the failure of Aerys’s Hand, Lord Merryweather, to deal with the uprising against him, Lord Connington was made Hand of the King. He nearly defeated Robert, only to be defeated at Stoney Sept by the rebels.
Jon Connington was stripped of his lands and titles and sent into exile, where he is said to have died. Robert Barathoen restored the castle and some of its lands to a cousin of Connington’s upon ascending to the throne, but he kept the treasury and withheld lordship from Connington’s successor. Another Connington, Ser Alyn Connington (known as the Pale Griffin), was a famous Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.

Borrell for "Signed Books"
The Borrells are from Sweetsister. Sweetsister is probably one of the Three Sisters, a trio of islands in the bay called the Bite. Lord Borrell is styled Shield of Sisteron, Master of Breakwater Castle, and Keeper of the Night Lamp.

??? for "T-shirts"
This one I cannot figure out. It is a longship with a setting sun so one would think Iron Islands but no. And it is not Seaworth.

Beesbury for "Knights"
The Beesbury's are from Honeyholt. Beesbury sits next to the Honeywine river, which flows towards Oldtown and the Whispering Sound. The only male members of the house to appear or be mentioned includes Ser Humfrey, a knight who performed marvellously against Ser Humfrey Hardyng (his brother by marriage) in a tourney at Ashford during the reign of King Daeron II, a fat knight named Ser Bertram encountered at a village, and Lord Warryn, the head of the house in the year 300. Beony Beesbury is wife to Ser Raymund, a son of Lord Walder Frey, while Lady Alys Beesbury is married to Ser Leo Tyrell who is a cousin of to the main branch of the Tyrells. Their motto is, “Beware Our Sting.”

Tarth for "Musings"
The Tarth's are from Evenfall Hall. Evenfall Hall is on the large island of Tarth, which lies east of Storm’s End at the edge of Shipbreaker Bay. Lord Selwyn, called the Evenstar, rules the house. He has but one child, a daughter named Brienne. Brienne is taller and more muscular than most men, and she is called the Beauty as a mockery for the fact that her face is exceedingly plain with a too-wide mouth, thick lips, prominent and crooked teeth, and a nose several-times broken. Her skill as a warrior, however, keeps any mockery behind her back.

Marbrand for "What I'm Watching"
The Marbrands are from Ashemark. Their motto is, “Burning Bright.” The only members of the house to appear or be mentioned are Lord Damon Marbrand, Darlessa who is the widow of Ser Tygett Lannister, and Lord Damon’s heir Ser Addam, a well-liked, skilled fighter and battle commander.

Brax for "What I'm Reading"
The Brax's are from Hornvale. House Brax is one of the chief bannerhouses of the Lannisters. Lord Andros Brax once came to Riverrun to attempt to marry one of his sons to Catelyn or Lysa Tully. His heir is Ser Tytos, and he has two younger sons, Ser Robert and Ser Flement. He also has a brother, Ser Rupert Brax. Ser Flement is wed to Lady Morya, a daughter of Lord Walder Frey, who has given him three sons. One of them, named Robert, is fostered at Casterly Rock as a page.

Yronwood for "Home"
Yronwood is located at the southern end of the Boneway, and Lord Yronwood is styled Warden of the Stone Way, which may be a particular stretch of the pass. Their motto is, “We Guard the Way.” The only members of the house to be mentioned are Lord Anders Yronwood, who is the current head, his son Cletus, and the old Lord Yronwood, a huge warrior with a fierce reputation and a fierce temper. When the young Prince Oberyn Martell was caught with Lord Yronwood’s mistress, the lord challenged him to a duel. Though it was to first blood, given the prince’s youth and high birth, and though both took cuts, it was Prince Oberyn who mended because Lord Yronwood died of the wound he took after it festered. It was whispered after that that the prince had poisoned his sword, and so he earned the byname of the Red Viper. The Yronwoods are one of the most powerful houses in Dorne. Lord Anders is known as the Bloodroyal, which may reference the fact that the Yronwoods were petty kings before Nymeria and Mors Martell united Dorne under their rule. There is an ancient feud between the Fowlers and the Yronwoods related to this, as the Fowlers chose the Martells over the Yronwoods.

Anyways, I was bored and everytime I visit his site, I wonder, whose arms are these and why did he pick them. Maybe he already answered a question about this or am I really lame for wondering. ;)

P.S. Thanks to the heraldry information on the Westeros website.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure there is a relevance, but it's an interesting idea.

Dayne for "Life and Times" - an interesting choice
This is an interesting one. The Daynes form part of the important backstory of the series, Ashara and Ser Arthur in particular. However, their role in the current story is limited.

Connington for "From my Readers"
Jon Connington was stripped of his lands and titles and sent into exile, where he is said to have died. Robert Barathoen restored the castle and some of its lands to a cousin of Connington’s upon ascending to the throne, but he kept the treasury and withheld lordship from Connington’s successor. Interesting :p

SPOILER

He aiten't dead and will appear in ADWD.

Borrell for "Signed Books"
Cough.

SPOILER

House Borrell play a role, albeit relatively minor from the look of it, in ADWD. They also played a small but extremely vital role in the War of the Usurper, which also becomes clearer in ADWD.

House Yronwood are mentioned a lot in AFFC and House Marbrand are mentioned a fair few times as being stalwart, reliable and honourable soldiers of the Westerlands. Both Jaime and Tyrion think very highly of Ser Addam Marbrand, who is now serving as Lord Commander of the City Watch in King's Landing (at least I think he still is, Tywin put him in that position back in ASoS). House Tarth has obviously become quite prominent through Brienne and the possible, if unclear, connection to Ser Duncan the Tall.

Yeah, I suspect there aren't specific reasons for which House represents each topic. The random 'lesser' Houses, I reckon, were just picked out as being the most interesting looking arms.

Wert, are your spoilers fact or opinion? Sounds interesting :)

Not that it really matters much but Ser Addam Marbrand is currently accompanying Jaime Lannister's host through the riverlands. Apparently he was pretty relieved to be able to wear a cloak that wasn't gold.

Fact :)

Rather more spoilerific spoilers:

SPOILER
From the second Tyrion chapter: Jon Connington, under the impenetrable alias 'Griff', is running a small mercenary company in the Free Cities. Ilyrio hires them to escort Tyrion to Meereen.

From the first Davos chapter: Davos visits Sweetsister on his way to White Harbour to convince Lord Manderly to join Stannis' cause. We learn that Lord Borrell took Ned Stark briefly hostage on his way from the Vale to Winterfell at the start of the War of the Usurper, but Stark convinced him to let him go free and pretend he was never there, which meant Borrell could stay on the winning side whoever came out on top in the war.

Could they be clues? Which Houses will have an important role in shapping the outcome of the series.

Notice that two are from Dorne.

None are from the North.

I'm grasping at straws here folks!!! :D

JDP, Wert's sources are from GRRM's verbal and written comments regarding ASOIAF. He gleans them from Martin's appearances at conventions, book signings, and internet postings from Martin, Martin's publisher, and Martin's significant other. Plus, I think Wert knows GRRM personally... though I don't think he'd state any info as fact unless it was publicly corroborated by an above source.

It's either that or Wert has sold his soul to the devil to know this information.
