This subject has been touched on here and there but we still do not know for sure who is Aurane Waters? I feel that GRRM introduced this character for a reason more than deceiving Cersei.

In one earlier thread (AEGON. Just a lame thought) it was suggested that he has Targaryen features and therefore could be baby Aegon that lived. But it was concluded he would be too old by about 5 years to be Aegon (although looks can be deceiving).

We know he left with the new warships that were being built for Cersei. But where to? One obvious suggestion is to join Dany and offer her the ships to carry her army across the Narrow Sea. Could it be that he is an agent of Varys or Illyrio planted on the Small Council with the goal of aquiring these ships?

Could he be working for Littlefinger? This one is more of stretch as there is no evidence he would be.

Could he be working for Stannis or Mel to regain some of the ships they lost? Again no hint of this and one would think that Stannis would tell Davos (if Stannis knew that is).

Or is he simply the ******* (and pirate) he is and took advantage of the situation and will sell the ships to the highest bidder: Dany, Illyrio, Euron, the Redwines, Highgarden, Doran, Bravosi pirates?

I think this is the most likely, although certainly not a given. Dany will have to cross the water at some point, along with her army.Waters' fleet would make this easier. It's also more likely that varys and/or Illyrio were involved than someone like Stannis for isnatnce, who seems to have little to no influence in King's Landing.

Good post btw.

Thanks Imp.

I don't remember from AFFC how many ships he left with but I seem to recall it was the 2 or 3 that had been built. Could of been higher. I also recall that these were to quite formidable warships. Need to go home and double check my copy of AFFC. It was in one of the last Cersei chapters I think.

I also don't recall who he got to crew these ships. His own men? Sellswords and pirates?

Combined with Victarion's fleet, Dany could dominate the seas.

TK, good topic.

I seem to recall that Cersei poorly treated the emissary from the Iron Bank of Braavos. I also seem to recall that someone said, "The Iron Bank will have its due." Mayhaps, Aurane is a repo man for the Iron Bank.

Edit: I just towerofthehanded (it's my new verb) Aurane Waters. Seems he is some ******* of the Velaryon family (a Valyrian family) of the Stormlands. He fought for Stannis on the Blackwater but was captured. He was pardoned by Tywin, Joffrey's Hand. Even though he fought against Joffrey, he was somehow promoted to Master of Ships, i.e. First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord High Admiral, or Secretary of the Navy. That's like President Obama appointing Sean Hannity as his new Whitehouse Spokesman... weird.

Didn't Waters win his favour through valiant acts during the battle of the Blackwater? A bit of an unlikely and roundabout way to get a bit of compensation, Boaz.

Cul, Catchy User Title? Aye, it is.

Maybe his promotion was to gain favor with the Stormlords. I'm not real sure what Tywin and Cersei were doing here, but it seems some stricter vetting was needed.

I thought so...

Well, that edit makes it even more unlikely that he is working for the Iron Bank, I'd say. I'd reckon he's going to take the ships to Dany, then. Valyrian blood and all that, and he's obviously a ladder-climber.

With what I know from the books, I can say Aurane has only 2 choices at this moment Dany and Stannis.

Many choices but 3 are likely the more viable ones:

Dany
Stannis
Euron

But the specter of an unknown force in the Free Cities exists.

We don't really know what ties either man really has. Euron has been away for years and the Drowned Man only knows who he's in league with.

There may be none, he does know the Greyjoys are pillaging looting and pirating up and down the coast. He may just want a piece of the action and booty. He strikes me as the ******* pirate who would do that kind of thing.

You have to remember that a lot of people who were against Robert were also pardoned, some of which had and gained high positions. I'm thinking of Old Man Selmy and Varys, for instance. So it's not that strange to see that Aurane was elevated to such a position. I'm personally still thinking that he will be used to claim Targaryen holdings and rally those who would support them to either be lured out and exposed as traitors or used as supporters of the cause of whomever put forward the fake Targaryen.

Could it be that the Tyrells are behind putting him in that position? The Queen of Thorns is certainly savy enough and they were very strong Targaryen supporters. In fact, they were the last major House to bend the knee to Robert and he had no choice but to forgive them.

We have been speculating on these boards for quite some time on what the Tyrells are really after. Power solely for themselves or power that could mean a return to Targaryen rule.
