We have the first two Shannow books, which my other half has read, and there's a third one,Bloodstone which we don't have yet. But on FF I see there's a second series set in the dark ages that sounds interesting. Am I right in thinking that John Shannow doesn't feature in that series? Anyone read all these?

Yep, the other Sippstrassi/Bloodstone series is based on the Arthur legend. The common link between the two is the stones and Shannow's not in them.
They're not a bad duo, but not as good as Shannow. Basically they give you more of a background into the stones themselves. If you enjoy Gemmell's style of writing then you'll enjoy them but they're not essential reading to the Shannow series.
If you want to go deeper into Gemmell's work, ty the Rigante series or the Waylander triology, both very good with Waylander similar to Shannow in some ways. However, only Shannow is set in a futuristic post apocalistic world, everthing else is more fantasy based but not heavy on the magic.

Hope you enjoy them.

Well I've not read any Gemmell yet,I got the books for my other half but got curious. I'd like a fantasy that isn't stereotyped, not all Magic and Dragons and People With Weird Names and High Places of Magic with lots of Capital Letters.

Then you should enjoy Gemmell. the 'magic' is quite low key and easy to follow and nothing is solved by a supreme magical event as can happen in some fantasy. Most people base DG in heroic fantasy as it's about the people/characters. Oh, and theres no dragons:D

Shannow books is different compared to other DG fantasy series. Tell you other half she can read Shannow books on their own. The Arthur themed books are good enough but not near best works of DG.

If she liked Shannow recommend Legend(Druss books),Waylander books,Rigante books.

Also AE of all his books Shannow would be the best start for you. It has certain sf elements that you would like if your other half havent told you everything already.

Cheers Con. I'm also looking for good fantasy ty read,as a break from SF,and would like to try his Drenai or Rigante books myself, and maybe other similar authors. Would also try some REH's Conan books if only I could find one!

REH is good with anything try to find his Solomon Kane,Kull,Bran Mak Morn books if you cant find Conan.

Speaking about Rigante i can send you Sword in The Storm(Rigante book 1) through Bookmooch if you cant find it in the library.

Its not a new paperback like my other DG books i collect so i have no trouble giving away since i plan to get a new copy soon.
