This is driving me absolutely crazy. There is a series of books (maybe three?) that I read in the mid-90's that I would like to re-explore. I have to apologize for the lack of info! I have been searching all manner of combinations of what I remember!

The culture was very heavily Roman based in structure, yet with plenty of space travel. Lead was a young man (the typical right of passage sort). There was also a mercenary, battle in the making etc. I can actually see the cover of two of the books in my mind and though one of the author's was prominent I absolutely cannot remember the name of either the book OR the author.

Thanks in advance!

Very little to base this on, but could it be David Drake's "Ranks of bronze" series? Mixes legions and space travel?

If you remember a cover, perhaps describe it; there are those here very gifted at translating into their own symbols and recognising them.

Could it be the Tour of the Merrimack series by R. M. Meluch? (The Myriad, Wolfstar, The Sagittarius Command, Strength & Honor.)

I'm not sure that they're old enough, though.
