I've just finished reading Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' books and have also become a massive fan of 'Watchmen' so now I'm looking for more graphic novels to read.

Any suggestions? :)

I'll just suggest the ones I've read, or have heard very good things about.
Series:

The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman is essential reading. The plots are intricate and intelligent, and generally revolves around Morpheus, a god like being who rules over the land of people's dreams.

Preacher By Garth Ennis. A violent, vulgar, yet intelligent and raucously funny series revolving around a Texas Preacher who is imbued with 'the word of god'. It has corrupt angels, an irish vampire, a clandestine religious order who intend to rule the world, a real cowboy from hell called the Saint of Killers and a teenager with an arse for a face.

Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis. This series follows the exploits of a futuristic gonzo journalist called Spider Jerusalem. I've only read one of the books but found it to be outstanding quality.

Stand Alone Graphic Novels:

Maus by Art Spiegleman. I've never read this (I know, I really should but I just haven't been able to bring myself to do so yet.) It is basically an allegory of the plight of the jews in Nazi Germany with mice as the protagonists.

V for Vendetta by Alan Moore. If you've seen the movie you'll know the basic idea, but the book is so much better with much greater depth. They changed a great many things for the film and ommited even more. A great read.

The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. The quintessential Batman Graphic Novel. It revolves around an older Batman who comes out of retirement to deal with the overwhelming gang problem that is plaguing Gotham City and ends up fighting not only the Joker but also Superman who is nothing more than a tool for the Reagan administration.

The Killing Joke by Alan Moore. I have not read this one either, but I hear nothing but good things about it.

There's a hell of lot of other good stuff out there, but I can't think of any more of the top of my head. A good place to start is to find books that were released on DCs Vertigo imprint, which is their line for mature comics.

Y the Last man is a great series I'd recommend, along with Walking Dead and the Preacher.

Y the Last Man was great and I was sad to see it end (despite a logical ending point). Fables is great, Preacher, Walking Dead (in GN is probably a better read than single issues), and Ex-Machina I think is great...

Yes, i'd second the Preacher series.

Being somewhat older and from the UK, i'd also recommend some 2000AD stories as well. Halo Jones, Bad Company, Charlie's War, Rogue Trooper and Judge Dredd. (Start with the Apocolypse war. Incredible and great fun.)

Dresden Files has hit the New York Times, and has also been nominated for the Hugo Award as well :)

My favourite's have to be,

The Dark Knight Returns, A Death in the Family and The Killing Joke. Yes sorry all are Batman graphic novels.

The Batman Hush GN's are good as well, I nearly stopped breathing at one point with the excitment of a character returning.

All are really good reads.

I just finished volume 2 of The Sandman and am enjoying it immensely. I also just finished volume 1 of Hellblazer - also very good, John Constantine is an interesting, multilayered character.

My favorite stand alone graphic novel The Death of Captian Mar-vel. Excellently done and posess a good delimma for the characters.

Silver Surfer: Requiem
by Straczynski is pretty good.

I'll second Transmetropolitan (Duchessprozac, it stays that good throughout.)

DMZ by Brian Wood has it's moments.

The Boys brings together Garth Ennis (Writer of Preacher) and Darick Robertson (Artist of Transmet) and is awesome because they are both awesome.

And you might want to check out 100 Bullets by Azzarello

Graphic novels? Will you tolerate Japanese ones?

The main ones:
One Piece
Naruto
Bleach

Other novels that you should also get to.
Boys:Be (romance)
Great Teacher Onizuka (gangster who becomes a teacher, GREAT storyline, very motivational)
Neon Genesis: Evangelion (nerve linking, robotics harnessed for the defence of mankind)

There are MILLIONS of books. Go to www.tokyopop.com for the listings of Manga (they're mostly japanese, I'll have to find you a comic website).

I hear Maus is really good but i haven't read it, so that is purely based on rumour. From the ones i have read the Graphic Novels i have particularly enjoyed reading is - Kick Ass, Wanted, Watchmen, Joker, Sin City and From Hell.

Maus is absolutely amazing and horrifying. It's also the only comic I know that has won a Pulitzer prize.

I'll try not to mention the ones that have already been talked about (like Maus, which is a work of genius). My favourite graphic novels are as follows (in no particular order):

Fun Home by Alison Bechdel - Autobiographical and very eloquent. (and ever so slightly lesbian)

Gemma Bovery by Posy Simmonds - Story about culture clashes and middle class boredom

Tamara Drewe by Posy Simmonds - Story about adultery and drama in a small English village.

Kabuki by David Mack - A feast for the eyes, but very difficult to read. David Mack creates narratives that are very different from what you'd expect from a graphic novel.

Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean - Brilliantly told and brilliantly drawn/painted. A must!

The Tale of one Bad Rat by Bryan Talbot - Hard hitting story about child abuse.

(I'll prolly add to this list when I get back to the UK. Can't see my bookshelf right now, so I'm sure I've forgotten something :D)

Ghost in a shell by Masamune Shirow, Metabarons by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

If you enjoyed Sandman I would reccomend the Saga of the Swamp Thing by Alan Moore, in six volumes. I haven't read anyone elses run so I couldn't comment on quality.
